MARAUDERS OVERPOWER LIONS 49-8 IN FOOTBALL
The game was close after one quarter as McMaster (2-1) held a narrow 7-0 lead. The Marauders opened it up further six minutes into the second with another touchdown, but York (0-3) cut into that lead a few minutes later when quarterback Nick Coutu (St. Catharines, Ont.) completed a 10-yard pass to Matt Davis (Mississauga, Ont.) for a touchdown to make the score 14-7.
McMaster blew the game open after that, putting 35 points up on the board – four touchdowns, two field goals and a rouge – to seal the win.
The Lions could not stop McMaster running back Jordan Kozina (Brantford, Ont.), who caught two touchdowns and rushed for another in the game. Overall, he accumulated 142 yards of total offence, including 108 yards on the ground. Also giving the Lions fits on the afternoon were the quarterbacks. Ryan Fantham (London, Ont.) started the game and completed 14-of-18 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for another major score. Just before the end of the half, Ryan Quinlan (South Woodslee, Ont.) came in and was equally as impressive, going 11-of-14 for 203 yards and a touchdown.
Coutu had his best game of the season, completing five passes for 73 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Running back Jacob Appiah (Etobicoke, Ont.) led the team with 75 rushing yards, including one stellar play where he went 37 yards down field.
Defensive standout Steven Reading (Fenelon Falls, Ont.) was one again the game leader in tackles, this time with 12. Andre Clark (Mississauga, Ont.) recorded the lone interception for York on an errant Fantham pass and also had nine tackles, while Jason Marshall (Innisfil, Ont.) had six tackles and returned a kick-off 37 yards.
McMaster's first scoring drive came five-and-a-half minutes into the first quarter and went 11 plays for 86 yards. Fantham was sacked in the red zone to push the Marauders back, but he redeemed himself on the next play with a 14-yard pass to Kozina for the opening points of the game.
On York's ensuing drive, the Lions attempted to get on the board with a field goal but it was blocked by McMaster.
Clarke's interception came on the first play of the second quarter but the Lions went three and out to give the ball back to the Marauders. The next three drives all resulted in touchdowns, two for McMaster and one for the Lions, to make the score 21-7 in favour of McMaster.
The Lions tried to cut the lead to 11 with a field goal but the snap sailed over kicker Adam Moretti's (Melbourne, Australia) head. However, he was able to recover quickly and still executed a good punt.
Now with Quinlan in the game, McMaster got close to another touchdown but two incomplete passes forced the Marauders to attempt a field goal that sailed wide. Marshall went down in the end zone to give the Marauders one point. McMaster took a 22-7 lead into the halftime break.
It was all McMaster in the second half as the Marauders rattled off three straight touchdowns in the third quarter and a pair of field goals in the fourth. The Lions got their final point of the game with no time remaining on the clock. Moretti tried a field goal that went left of the upright and was downed in the end zone for the rouge.
Overall, the Marauders had 666 yards of total offence while the Lions came up with 218, their best total of the season. Penalties were also a factor in the game as McMaster had 11 for 115 yards and York had 14 for 104 yards.
Next up for the Lions is a trip to Kingston to face the undefeated Queen's Gaels (3-0) on Sat., Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. The Marauders will return home to host the Laurier Golden Hawks (2-1) also on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ron Joyce Stadium.
