OUA FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENCE: Dan Brannagan, Queen's Gaels, Quarterback and Michael Faulds, Western Mustangs, Quarterback
In what was an amazing offensive display at the 102nd Yates Cup, both Dan Brannagan (Burlington, Ont.) and Michael Faulds (Eden Mills, Ont.) of the Western Mustangs combined for over 1,000 passing yards in Queen's 43-39 victory to win the 102nd Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Petroleums. Brannagan, a fifth-year accounting major, threw for 515 yards and five touchdowns and earned the Dalt White Trophy as Yates Cup most valuable player. Brannagan's 515 passing yards was the fourth-highest single game total in CIS playoff history. Faulds finished 25-of-38 passing for one touchdown and 509 yards in his final OUA game. After a knee injury forced Faulds to leave the game with one minute remaining, he returned for the final play and saw his third-down pass fall just over his receiver while trying to engineer the game-winning drive. Earlier in the week, Faulds was named the OUA nominee for the Hec Crighton Award. Both Brannagan and Faulds are also Pioneer Petroleums OUA co-male athletes of the week.
DEFENCE: Shomari Williams, Queen's Gaels, Defensive End
Shomari Williams (Brampton, Ont.) was a defensive force as the Queen's Gaels captured their first Yates Cup since 1978 with a 43-39 win over the Western Mustangs. Williams recorded eight solo tackles, including three tackles for a loss in the victory. The fourth-year defensive end also added a key sack in the second quarter as he took Western quarterback Michael Faulds down in his own end zone for a safety.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Dan Village, Queen's Gaels, Kicker
Dan Village (Abbotsford, B.C.) scored 11 points on Saturday afternoon to help lead the Queen's Gaels to their first Yates Cup championship since 1978. The third-year geography major was 2-for-3 on field goal attempts and 5-for-5 on extra points. Village connected on field goals from 44 and 26 yards as the Gaels earned a 43-39 win over the Western Mustangs.
