GOLDEN HAWKS TAKE BATTLE OF WATERLOO ON UNIVERSITY RUSH
This is the eighth straight time the Golden Hawks have defeated the Warriors in the Battle of Waterloo.
The Hawks got off to a quick start, scoring their first touchdown just seven minutes into the game off a 54-yard reception from Alex Anthony (Victoria, B.C.). Quarterback Luke Thompson (London, Ont.) took a one-yard plunge to give the home team a 7-0 lead.
Chris Mamo (London, Ont.) followed that up with a 15-field goal to give the Hawks a 10-0 lead. The field goal was one of his three on the day with the longest being 32 yards. The three field goals moves Mamo into a tie for second place on Laurier's career field goals list with 38. First place is held by Brian Devlin with 45.
With the Hawks fresh off a 10-0 lead, the Warriors got on the board with a gadget play that saw a Sean Cowie (Dundas, Ont.) pass to Dustin Zender (Waterloo, Ont.) who went straight to the end zone.
Laurier came back on the ensuing drive, and Montoya punched in his fourth rushing major of the season.
"My offensive line makes it easy, I don't want to take the credit," said a humble Montoya following the game.
Late in the second quarter, Thompson went down to injury and was taken off the field.
"It was a really tough loss," said Montoya. "He is my best friend and it's always hard to watch one of your own get carried off the field."
Alex Anthony led all receivers with two catches for 81 yards. Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.) picked up 68 yards on three receptions. Heap was also instrumental on punt returns racking up 117 yards on seven attempts.
For the Warriors, the Ray Owen's player of the game was Mitch Nicholson (Grand Haven, Mich.) who had 10.5 tackles (nine solo, three assisted) in the game.
"We played hard, but I wanted that one, we all did," said Nicholson.
Other standouts for Waterloo were quarterback Luke Balch (London, Ont.) who went 15-of-32 passing and threw for 162 yards and Kyle Schertzer (Waterloo, Ont.) who had eight tackles (seven solo, two assisted). Balch also had 69 yards rushing in 14 attempts.
Laurier is next in action on Sat., Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. when they travel to Hamilton, Ont. to take on the McMaster Marauders. The Warriors stay in Waterloo as they host Windsor at 1 p.m.
