MCCREIGHT STRIKES TWICE AS NO. 10 GRYPHONS DOWN WARRIORS IN FOOTBALL
The Gryphons managed to escape the bad weather with their third win of the season. Due to an early injury to running back Nick Fitzgibbon (Puslinch, Ont.) back-up Josh McCreight (Perth, Ont.) filled in admirably, striking gold twice to help Guelph to the win. The fifth-year running back would finish the day with 124 yards on 15 carries.
While Guelph's regular starting quarterback Justin Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) had to sit the game out due to a suspension, back-ups Chris Rossetti (Mississauga, Ont.) and Kurtis Dance (Guelph, Ont.) combined in a joined effort to spark their offence. Rossetti finished 10-of-19 passing for 160 yards, while Dance was 3-of-8 for 23 yards.
Not until well into the first quarter did either team score as McCreight muscled the ball into the end zone from nine yards out. About six minutes later Rosetti tossed up a nice 49-yard bomb to an open Jamie Shaw (Mississauga, Ont.). Dance then took over and threw up a jump ball in the end zone that saw Shaw come down with his lone score of the day. Rob Maver (Mississauga, Ont.) booted a 14-yarder a few minutes later putting the home squad up 17-0, but Waterloo would not give up easily.
Three minutes later Warrior wideout Nick Anapolski (Guelph, Ont.) took a screen pass and turned on the jets, outrunning everyone to the end zone for a 68-yard score. Anapolski would lead all receivers on the day with five catches for 102 yards.
Although Waterloo quarterback Luke Balch started the game it was his teammate Evan Martin who took over and helped his team chip away at their deficit. Working with just over one minute left in the first half, Martin first took off for 25 yards followed by a nice 22-yard toss to Andrew Ward (Mississauga, Ont.) who was running a corner route. Now at the one-yard line Martin's running back Matt Socholotiuk (Waterford, Ont.) ran the ball in to make the score 17-14.
The third quarter started with a Warrior interception on an errant Dance pass, however it was the Gryphons who would get the ball back a few minutes later. McCreight had a few solid runs that led to Maver's second field goal of the game in which the fourth-year kicker was gold from 43 yards out.
McCreight would continue to feed off of this momentum when he took a hand off from Rosetti and raced 47 yards to the house, beating his defenders with some nice speed to set the score at 27-15.
A minute later at the 2:14 mark Martin would zip a 25-yarder to an open Dustin Zender (Waterloo, Ont.) on the left sideline. Socholotiuk then took a hand-off and plunged the ball in from a yard out to cut at the deficit. Skip ahead to the fourth quarter where Rossetti exploited a mismatch that saw a Warrior linebacker covering receiver Dave Harrison (Waterdown, Ont.). Harrison ran an out-and-up and found himself open and able to haul in a 25-yarder that lead to a one-yard Rosetti rushing touchdown.
With the score at 34-22 Guelph would concede a safety with four minutes left in the game and go on to take the match 34-24.
The Gryphon defence played quite well, including linebacker Adam Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) who registered 10.5 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble while defensive half-back James Savoie notched 8.5 tackles to go along with a nice interception on Balch.
Guelph travels to Ottawa on Friday night to take on the Gee-Gees at 7 p.m. while Waterloo hosts Queen's Saturday at 1 p.m.
