NO. 10 MARAUDERS EDGE LANCERS IN OVERTIME IN SATURDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
With the loss, the Lancers fall to 2-5 on the season.
On a frigid Saturday evening in Windsor, the Lancers opened up the scoring early in the second quarter with a 23-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sam Malian (Lasalle, Ont.) to Cory Fernandes to go ahead 7-0 .
The Marauders fought back later in the quarter as they recovered a Lancer fumble that led to a 21-yard touchdown pass to Mathew Peressini (Hannon, Ont.) to tie the game at 7-7. Peressini led McMaster with 5 catches for 61 yards and a touchdown.
Lancer quarterback Sam Malian was injured again in the second quarter and was replaced by Greg Orsini (Woodbridge, Ont.) who came in and took over the Lancer offence.
McMaster would then take their first lead of the game on a one-yard run by Jordan Kozina (Brantford, Ont.) to give the visitors a 14-7 advantage at the half.
The second half was a hard fought defensive battle as the Lancers defence elevated their game and forced five turnovers in the second half alone.
From there, the Lancers engineered a long drive which was led by Orsini and capped off by a one-yard run from Derek Hymers to even up the score 14-14 with 8:43 remaining in the game.
Neither team was able to put together a game-winning drive near the end of regulation as the game moved into overtime.
With each team getting a possession on the opposition's 35-yard line, the Lancers opened up overtime and were picked off on their first play by Michael Daly (Kitchener, Ont.), giving the Marauders a chance to seal the victory.
On a field goal attempt, the Lancers blocked the kick and recovered the ball, carrying it all the way down field for what appeared to be a game-winning touchdowns, setting off a wild scene.
But the Lancers were called for a block to the rear in the end zone, negating the touchdown. The Marauders were awarded a single point, ending the game in McMaster's favour.
McMaster running back Joey Nemet (Burlington, Ont.) rushed for 164 yards on 23 carries. Kozina added 116 yards and a touchdown on 16 attempts.
Marauders quarterback Kyle Quinlan (South Woodslee, Ont.) completed 11-of-23 passes for 154 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in his first start in his home region.
For Windsor, Orsini finished the game 9-of-17 passing for 89 yards. Kamar Anglin (Newmarket, Ont.) carried the ball 10 times for 64 yards while Nick Baldassi (Windsor, Ont.) caught five passes for 76 yards.
Windsor fifth-year linebacker John Celestino (Windsor, Ont.) had 11.5 tackles and a forced fumble.
The Marauders are still in a fight for second place in the OUA standings. With four teams tied at 5-2, it will come down to a final weekend to determine playoff seedings.
