OUA FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENCE: Nathan Riva, Western Mustangs, Running Back
Sophomore running back Nathan Riva took a licking and kept on ticking, setting an OUA record with 42 carries and amassing a career-high 279 yards as the No. 5 Western Mustangs advanced to the 102nd Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Petroleums at Richardson Stadium in Kingston, Ont. on Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. after a 26-16 win over the No. 7 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Nov. 7. Riva (LaSalle, Ont.) set the OUA single-game record for rushing attempts with 42 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter for Western.
DEFENCE: Osie Ukwuoma, Queen's Gaels, Defensive End
Osie Ukwuoma (Mississauga, Ont.) was instrumental in helping the No. 4 Queen's Gaels defence in shutting down the No. 9 McMaster Marauders in the OUA semifinal on Nov. 7. The fourth-year defensive end recorded 6.5 tackles as well as a sack as the Gaels prevented McMaster from scoring a touchdown for the second game this season in a 32-6 win. Ukwuoma also played a big role in pressuring McMaster quarterback Kyle Quinlan and limiting him to just 185 yards passing on the day.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Darryl Wheeler, Western Mustangs, Kicker/Punter
Place kicker and punter Darryl Wheeler (Hamilton, Ont.) had another outstanding game for the No. 5 Western Mustangs, booting four field goals and two converts for 14 points in a 26-16 win over the No. 7 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Nov. 7. He had one booming punt over 50 yards on six attempts, averaging 34.5 yards. He also had one punt inside Laurier's 20-yard line. Wheeler added five kickoffs for 245 yards, averaging an impressive 49 yards per kick, despite blustery conditions. He also made one special teams tackle. His field goals from 17, 34, 34 and 31 yards accounted for 12 points in a game with a 10-point difference.
