PIZZA PIZZA OUA TEAMS OF THE MONTH
HAMILTON, Ont. - The following Ontario University Athletics (OUA) teams have been named Pizza Pizza OUA Teams of the Month for September, 2009.
All Pizza Pizza OUA Teams of the Month will receive a pizza party, courtesy of Pizza Pizza.
MALE: Western Mustangs, Football
The defending OUA champion and No. 2 nationally-ranked Western Mustangs were 4-0 in September and defeated nationally ranked Ottawa, Wilfrid Laurier and Guelph during the month. Running back Nathan Riva (LaSalle, Ont.) led the nation in scoring with 10 touchdowns and was at the top for all-purpose yards. Preseason Hec Crighton favourite Michael Faulds (Eden Mills, Ont.) led the nation in many categories including passing yards, touchdowns and total offence. Western averaged 717 all-purpose yards per game, including 544 yards of total offence per game and had 1,367 passing yards in the month.
FEMALE: Guelph Gryphons, Field Hockey
The Guelph Gryphon women's field hockey team has dominated the 2009 season so far with a perfect record and sits atop the OUA leaderboard. During the month of September the Gryphons went 6-0, outscoring the opposition 26-2 and lead OUA with most goals scored. Third-year player Brienne Stairs (Kitchener, Ont.) was the top scorer in the scorer in the country with 15 goals, and was named the OUA and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) athlete of the week once during September.
