OUA M-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: RECORD DAY FOR RIDGEBACKS
The Ridgebacks came out flying as they scored five unanswered goals in the first half of the period, shocking the visiting Rams. Down 5-0 early on, Ryerson would claw back into the game with two goals of their own in less than a minute, but UOIT would strike once again just 31 second later as they would grab a 6-2 lead. It was a wild first period as in a span of 5:13 minutes, the teams had combined for six goals. Later in the period, Ryerson would score their third goal of the game to cut the Ridgebacks lead in half at 6-3.
The teams would trade goals in the second period, with the Ridgebacks holding a 7-4 lead entering the third.
When UOIT opened up scoring at the 8:47 mark of the third period to get an 8-4 lead, it looked as if a win was in the bag. Ryerson had different thoughts as they refused to give up, continuing to fight hard down the stretch. The Rams would score three consecutive goals to get within a one, but time would eventually run out as UOIT would hang on to pick up the thrilling 8-7 victory.
Wednesday's eight-goal performance set a new team record for UOIT for most goals in a game, as the previous record was seven set on Nov. 1, 2007 in an 8-7 loss to York. The six goals scored in the first period also set a new team record for most goals in a period, besting their previous record of four which was done twice earlier this season. Fifteen goals scored between the teams is also a new OUA season-high for most goals in a game.
Individually, Josh Vatri (Barrie, Ont.) set a new team record for most points in a game with four (two goals and two assists) on the night. Nathan Spaling (Drayton, Ont.) also had a great night as he registered three points including a goal and two assists.
Other Ridgebacks to have multi-point games included T.J. Legge (Chapleau, Ont.), Ryan Spencer (Woodville, Ont.) and Derrick Bagshaw (Oshawa, Ont.), all with two points apiece.
Alex Sharpe (Mt. Forest, Ont.), Cory Konecny (Stoney Point, Ont.) and Kevin Day (Toronto, Ont.) were the offensive threats for Ryerson combining for eleven points on the night.
Jeremy Whelan (Pickering, Ont.) of the Ridgebacks would score the eventual game-winner at the 8:47 mark of the third period.
With the win, UOIT jumps to 5-16-2 on the year while improving their home record to 5-6-1. Ryerson drops to 4-18-0 on the year and are currently on a seven-game losing streak.

MCGILL 8, CONCORDIA 1
MONTREAL, Que. – Sophomore Evan Vossen (Swift Current, Sask.) scored a pair of power play goals, including the game-winner and Toronto native Sam Bloom also tallied twice as McGill crushed Concordia 8-1 in a key men's university hockey game at the Ed Meagher Arena on Wednesday.
The result clinched a playoff berth for the Redmen - their 23rd in the past 26 years - and moved McGill into a tie with Concordia for second place in the OUA Far East Division standings. With six games remaining before playoffs, the Redmen, who have won five of their last six contests, own a 13-7-2 record and hold a game in hand over Concordia, which fell to 12-7-4.
Ben Gazdic, a junior from Toronto, had a career day for the Red & White. The 6-foot-1, 230-pound rearguard scored once, added a pair of helpers, five shots on net, three hits and registered a stellar plus-6 rating.
Gazdic opened the scoring on a Bobby Orr-like rush in the offensive zone, making his way around both defenders and scoring from the slot area around the five-minute mark. Concordia's Marc-Andre Rizk (Montreal, Que.) connected on a power play at the midway mark of the period.
McGill then exploded for five unanswered goals in the middle stanza and added two more markers in the final period.
Rounding out the scoring for McGill was rookie Francis Verrault-Paul (Mashteviatsh, Que.), whose 12th of the season at 6:55 of the second period gave McGill a 3-1 lead. Freshman Maxime Langelier-Parent (Levy, Que.) made it 4-1 some two minutes later and the rout was on. Left-winger Alexandre Picard-Hooper (Boucherville, Que.), who starred for Saint John in the QMJHL last year, then notched his ninth of the season late in the second period to make it 6-1.
The Redmen dominated from start to finish, outshooting Concordia 49-22, including a 22-5 margin in the second period.
Freshman goaltender Kevin Désfossés (Beauport, Que.), who joined the Redmen just three weeks ago, made 21 saves and improved his record to 3-1-0. Sophomore Maxime Joyal (11-9-0) of Chateauguay, Que., who took the loss for Concordia, was beaten seven times on 34 shots before giving way to under-study Sheldon Baerg (Burnaby, B.C.) for the final dozen minutes.
McGill has taken two of three encounters from Concordia this season and can win the season-series with a victory in the annual Corey Cup game, scheduled for Feb. 8 at the Ed Meagher arena.
