GAELS GAIN GROUND IN M-HOCKEY PLAYOFF RACE
With the win, Queen's extend their win streak to four games which is the team's longest since November, 2007. Queen's is now just one point behind the Ottawa Gee-Gees for the final playoff position with three games to play.
Pat Doyle (Smith Falls, Ont.) opened the scoring in the second for the Gaels with Burke adding an assist on the initial goal. Burke then added a his first of the game at 13:20 of the third period.
Carleton would respond to both of Queen's goals, with Mark Smith (Stittsville, Ont.) scoring in the second and Brandon MacLean (Burlington, Ont.) forcing overtime at 17:59 of the third.
Burke would score the winner just 31 seconds into the overtime frame, improving Queen's record to 10-13-0-2.
Brady Morrison (Thamesville, Ont.) made 31 saves on 33 shots in the win while Carleton's Alexander Archibald (Ottawa, Ont.) made 15 saves on just 18 shots.
Burke stepped into the interim captain's role prior to the game against Carleton because Jonathan Lawrance (Steinbach, Ont.) is sidelined with a strained MCL and is likely out for the season.
"He is deserving of leading this team," said head coach Brett Gibson. "He is motivated and his play represents that."
When asked about his performance and the new title, Burke was quick to point out that his teammates are an integral part of this playoff run.
"The ‘C' is just a letter, our entire team has rallied together while Jon has been injured."
Next up for the Gaels is the Ryerson Rams on Friday night before taking on Royal Military College in the Carr-Harris Cup, an annual grudge match between the cross-town rivals on Saturday. Both games start at 7:30 p.m. at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
Notes: Tuesday's game against Carleton was originally supposed to be played last Wednesday, but was postponed due to inclement weather… The game was delayed 20 minutes after Kingston native Ben Munroe delivered a hit on a Ravens player which shattered the glass on the boards.
