RAVENS ARE IN, GEE-GEES FORCED TO WAIT IN MEN'S HOCKEY
The Ravens record improves to 13-10-4 for 30 points, two points behind the Concordia Stingers going into the season finale at McGill. Carleton and Concordia will meet in the opening round of the playoffs, but are still battling over who will get home ice advantage in the best-of-three series. The Stingers host UQTR in their season finale this Friday.
The Ravens came out strong on Tuesday and dominated the game early controlling the play, and their hard work paid off seven minutes in as Ryan Berard (Niagara Falls, Ont.) beat Ottawa's goaltender Riley Whitlock (Calgary, Alta.) to give the home team a one-goal lead. Carleton outshot Ottawa 12-10 in the opening period.
The game continued with a fast pace as Ottawa capitalized on a 2-on-1 and tied the game on a goal by Dan McDonald (New Liskeard, Ont.) 90 seconds into the second period. Carleton again gained control of the game less than two minutes later as captain Andrew Gibbons (Oshawa, Ont.) scored his eighth goal of the season to regain the Ravens one-goal lead.
The Ravens defence, led by goaltender Alex Archibald (Ottawa, Ont.) stopped the Gee-Gees from tying the game and Carleton went into the second intermission up by a goal.
The third period was more hard hitting fast pace playoff style hockey as both teams challenge the goaltenders who both were excellent on the night. Carleton would continue to push Ottawa and the Gee-Gees would wind up with two critical penalties late in the game as Carleton's Berard scored his second goal of the night and Carleton's second power play goal of the night with just under three minutes remaining to ice the victory.
Archibald made 28 saves for his 13th OUA regular season victory of the year.
The Gee-Gees fell to 10-11-5, maintaining fifth in the OUA Far East, needing three points over its final two regular season games to earn a fifth straight playoff berth under head coach Dave Leger.
Ottawa outshot the Ravens 29-26 but finished 0-6 on the power play.
The Gee-Gees fell to 1-2-1 against the fourth-place Ravens this season and 3-4-1 against the second-year team overall, having been out-scored a combined 26-19.
Ottawa closes out the regular season this weekend as it hosts No. 10 McGill (17-7-2) on Saturday at 7 p.m., and Ryerson (5-20-1) on Sunday.
