OUA M-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: GOLDEN HAWKS FORCE GAME 3 ON SUNDAY
"Both teams played a good game tonight and we were fortunate enough to get the win," commented head coach Kelly Nobes. "Whitley and MacDougald had solid outings."
Laurier's Jeff MacDougald (Shallow Lake, Ont.) stopped 35 of 37 shots for the win while his counterpart Chris Whitley (Oshawa, Ont.) turned away 32 of 35.
The Thunderwolves Shandor Alphonso (Orangeville, Ont.) opened the scoring in the match just as Voakes stepped back on the ice after a hooking minor at 14:31 in the first. The goal stood until Ryan Bernardi (Etobicoke, Ont.) wired a shot from the point late in the second to tie the game.
Jean-Michel Rizk (Dunham, Que.) then scored a highlight reel goal, picking the pocket of a Lakehead defender and then going over top Whitley to give the Golden Hawks a lead. The Thunderwolves Brock McPherson (Brampton, Ont.) scored to start off the third while the purple and gold were defending a 5-on-3.
Voakes capped off the game by using his speed to beat the Wolves' defenders and then going backhand on Whitley to secure the victory.
"We'll celebrate for a short time, " said Voakes after scoring the overtime game winner. "But then we'll refocus so that we are ready for our next game."
Both teams will now look to game three of the series to be played on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Waterloo Recreation Complex. Tickets are available as of 6:30 at the gate.

NO. 6 WESTERN 3, YORK 2
Western wins best-of-three series 2-0
LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs men's hockey team earned a two-game series sweep defeating the York Lions 3-2 in Game 2 of the best-of-three OUA West semi-final series Feb. 28 in front of over 500 fans at Thompson Arena.
With the win, Western advances to the best-of-three OUA West Final series against either Lakehead or Laurier.
At Thompson Arena, Western took control early, as the Mustangs took a 2-0 lead. Patrick Ouellet (Baie-Comeau, Que.) snapped a shot that was stopped but the rebound squeezed through the five-hole of York goalie David Davenport (Bradford, Ont.), and red-hot rookie Aaron Snow (Windsor, Ont.) was there to pop it home, just over four minutes into the game on the power play to make it 1-0 early for Western.
Matt Raymond (Orillia, Ont.) nearly made it 2-0 but his backhand shot sailed through the crease, just missing the post behind a helpless Davenport with about seven minutes remaining in the first period.
But Western's persistence paid off. After a big penalty kill - one of five on the night - Yashar Farmanara exited the penalty box and joined the rush after a giveaway in the neutral zone by Lions forward Daniel Torres (Markham, Ont.). Farmanara finished the rush, taking a rebound off a Jeff Martens (Maple Ridge, B.C.) shot, and rifling it high glove side on Davenport to make it 2-0 Mustangs.
Brad Topping (Strathroy, Ont.) did plenty of stopping, making 12 first-period saves. But he probably would like to have both second-period goals against back, as York tied the game off a pair of Western miscues.
Bad defensive coverage allowed York to score their first goal just over four minutes into the second period. With Nathaniel Brooks (Markham, Ont.) wide open at the Western blue line, he sped in and fed winger Jerry Clarke (Barrie, Ont.) who joined the rush late. Clarke converted on a two-on-one, one-timing Brooks' pass low glove side to cut the Western lead to 2-1.
York's Tyler Harrison (Whitby, Ont.) scored on a weird play, as a funny bounce allowed him to get in alone and his shot handcuffed Topping as York tied the game at 2-2 midway through the second period.
The teams entered the third period tied. Western scored the game-winner within the first minute, as rookie Kevin Baker (Georgetown, Ont.) converted on an odd-man rush, snapping home a Keaton Turkiewicz (Brantford, Ont.) pass 48 seconds into the period to make it 3-2 for Western.
A huge kill on a five-on-three man advantage, highlighted by four Topping saves and a brilliant Adam Nemeth (Amherstburg, Ont.) shot block with just under 14 minutes left, gave Western the momentum.
York pulled their goal with just over 1:20 left but couldn't convert and Western held on to win.

MCGILL 6, TORONTO 3
McGill sweeps best-of-three series 2-0
TORONTO, Ont. – The Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey season came to an end as they fell to the McGill Redmen, 6-3, in Game 2 of OUA quarter-final action on Saturday at Varsity Arena. With the win, the Redmen will advance to the OUA semi-final against the winner of the UQTR Patriotes and Carleton Ravens.
First-year Redmen forward Andrew Wright (Toronto, Ont.) opened the scoring 3:42 into the first period as he sent a fluttering puck into the top corner of the net.
McGill scored again nine minutes later when a wide-open Guillaume Doucet (Montreal, Que.) caught Blues goaltender Russ Brownell (Oakville, Ont.) off guard to put the Redmen up by two.
The Blues picked up the pace and got on the board with 5:28 to go in the first frame. First-year forward Claudio Cowdrey (Mississauga, Ont.) sent a wide shot at McGill goaltender Kevin Desfosses (Beauport, Que.) and Byron Elliott (Burlington, Ont.) was there to bury the rebound. McGill was up 2-1 after the first period of play.
The Redmen continued to dominate in the second, scoring one even-strength marker and two power play goals. Two minutes into the second, Picard-Hooper won a clean face-off draw for the Redmen, sending the puck straight into the Blues net. Eric L'Italien (Ste. Foy, Que.) added McGill's fourth goal, tipping a Yan Turcotte (Laval, Que.) shot into the net and Picard-Hooper tallied his second goal of the game to build a four-goal lead.
Toronto finally responded with 22 seconds remaining in the period as Sean Fontyn (Mississauga, Ont.) scored his third goal of the season. The Redmen held a 5-2 lead going into the final frame.
The Blues came out on fire and notched another one 2:22 into the third period when Cowdrey tipped a Sean Kliewer (Bunkild, Man.) shot past Defousse.
Despite some good scoring chances and power play opportunities, the Blues could not complete their comeback attempt. With an empty net goal, McGill came away with a 6-3 win and a 2-0 series victory.
