BRADLEY NAMED 2008-09 RMC MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Third-year Business Administration student Vanessa Larochelle-Meilleur, 20, won her first Kelly Gawne Memorial Cup as RMC Female Athlete of the Year. Larochelle-Meilleur, who also earned the Top Third-Year and Outstanding Athlete awards, earned these accolades on the heels of her recent gold medal victory at the Canadian National World Cup team trials in Laval, Que., this past March. She is now a member of the 10 athlete team that will be representing Canada at the Taekwondo World Cup in the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Paul Bradley, 25, a fourth-year History student from Calgary, Alta., was named recipient of the Tommy Smart Cup as RMC Male Athlete of the Year. Bradley is a two-time OUA men's hockey All-Star, who finished this past season second on the RMC all-time scoring list with an impressive 130 points after four seasons.
Nicolas St-Amant, 21, from Brampton, Ont., has been instrumental in the successful return of the RMC running team over the past few years. Having served as team captain this past season, the fully bilingual Aeronautical Engineering student has excelled academically and militarily throughout his time at the college. St-Amant was named recipient of the H.R.H. Prince of Wales Cup for his excellence in all four components throughout his college years.
The Captain Matthew Dawe Memorial Cup is awarded annually to the outstanding male or female ROTP varsity athlete, of any year, who excels in all aspects of College life at RMC. Anna Dupuis, 21, from St. Andrew's West, Ont., has been a key member of the women's basketball team over the past four years. Having served as team captain the past two seasons, the Honours Psychology student has been a tremendous leader, mentor and ambassador for the women's basketball program and the college throughout her time at RMC.
Joining Dupuis from the women's basketball team as award recipients on this evening were Abby Edmison (Carleton Place, Ont.), who earned the top First-Year Athlete award after being named OUA East Rookie of the Year this past season. Fifth-year forward Sharlene Harding (Brampton, Ont.) shared the Best Team Captain award with Dupuis.
Other athletes to be honoured this evening were Richard Lim (Calgary, Alta.) of the men's hockey team, who was named top Second-Year Athlete. Lim's teammate, Tyler Spice (Chilliwack, B.C.), earned the Fair Play Award. Olivier Belanger-Nzakimuena (Fort McMurry, Alta.) of fencing and Nirmalan Jeganathan of taekwondo shared the top Fourth-Year Athlete honour. The men's rugby team was named RMC Team of the Year for 2008-09, following their second consecutive OUA playoff appearance.
