OUA M-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: NO. 3 GOLDEN HAWKS, NO. 5 PATRIOTES SURVIVE SCARES
The series win advances the Hawks to the OUA West final where they will compete against the No. 6-ranked Western Mustangs in another best-of-three contest.
Williams, a second year forward with the Hawks picked up his first goal of the playoffs and 10th of the year as he scored the series-ending marker.
"I've never scored such a significant goal like the one tonight," commented Williams on the game winner. "Magistrale and Peacock really made that play happen, all the guys tonight played well."
The defeat over Lakehead is the reversal of last season's result where the Hawks' year was ended at the hands of the T-Wolves in the OUA quarter-finals.
Craig Voakes (St. Thomas, Ont.) once again had a strong contest. The second year forward and former CIS Rookie of the Year netted the first two goals of the game including the game opener on the power-play.
"Lakehead is a strong team; you have to give them credit for the series," said the younger of the Voakes brothers. "Every time we were able to get up, they came up with opportunities to bring themselves back into it."
Team captain Nick Vergeer (West Lorne, Ont.) was the only other Hawks to pick up a pair of points in the contest and his came up as assists on Voakes' goals. Mike Galbraith (Oakville, Ont.) scored the third goal of the game for the purple-and-gold.
Two of the Thunderwolves goals came seconds after Laurier markers. Kris Hogg (Sicamous, B.C.) netted the first for the Wolves just 31 seconds later while Ryan Baird (Thunder Bay, Ont.) netted the third goal just 13 seconds later. Brock McPherson (Brampton, Ont.) scored the other of the Lakehead's goals.
Jeff MacDougald (Shallow Lake, Ont.) was tested with 35 shots throughout the night while his counterpart Chris Whitley (Oshawa, Ont.) stopped 28 of 32.
"It was outstanding to have the support of the fans tonight," commented Laurier bench boss Kelly Nobes. "Tonight's game was a great team effort. We created some great offensive opportunities while playing better defensively compared to the second game."
Looking forward to the next round of playoffs, Wilfrid Laurier has split the regular season series against the Western Mustangs with two wins, a loss in overtime and a loss in regulation. The last time these two teams met in the post season was in 1999-2000 when the Mustangs swept Laurier in two games in the division final.
"Western is a fast team with a lot of skill which is similar to Lakehead," commented Jean-Michel Rizk (Dunham, Que.) on the upcoming series. "We've split with them this year so it should be a good series."
