OUA WELL REPRESENTED AT FISU WOMEN'S HOCKEY SELECTION CAMP
Twenty players at the camp will be competing for a spot on the Canadian roster at the 2009 FISU Winter Universiade, Feb. 18-28 in Harbin, China.
The camp is held in conjunction with the Canadian under-22 women’s selection camp at York. FISU Canadian coach Dan Church (York University), who coached the under-22 team to an undefeated record last season in international play, will be scouting players from both camps to make his selections for the team.
CIS player of the year/forward Brayden Ferguson (Toronto) of St. Francis Xavier University is one of five all-Canadians at the FISU camp. The others are forwards Jennifer Newton (Norgenwold, Alta., Alberta), Vanessa Davidson (Kirkland, Que., McGill), defenceman Andrea Bevan (Collingwood, Ont., Laurier) and goalie Charline Labonte (Montreal, McGill).
Labonte, one of five members of the CIS champion McGill Martlets at the camp, helped Canada win a gold medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy
The OUA leads the way with seven players at the camp, including two players from host York University – forward Mandy Cole (Peterborough, Ont.) and defenceman Kelsey Webster (Duncan, B.C.). Cole will be making her return after breaking her left ankle last November in a game against the Brock Badgers.
The OUA champion/CIS runner-up Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks are represented by two players – Bevan and forward Andrea Ironside (Collingwood, Ont.)
The Quebec League sends six players, Atlantic University Sports sends four and Canada West has three players at the camp.
Canada is one of eight teams competing in the first women’s hockey tournament at a Winter Universiade. All players must be full-time students at a CIS school.
