OUA W-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: BLUES DEFEAT GRYPHONS IN SHOOTOUT
The Blues opened the season on Saturday and Karolina Urban (Kamloops, B.C.) got Toronto on the board midway through the second period capitalizing on a rebound in front of the net. Fourth-year assistant captain Annie DelGuidice (Hamilton, Ont.) added an insurance marker early in the third as she tipped an Amy Cornell (Oakville, Ont.) point shot past Brock goaltender Beth Clause (Hamilton, Ont.). The Blues came away with a convincing 2-0 victory over the Badgers.
Both goals came with a man advantage and first-year goalie Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) earned her first shutout of the season.
On Sunday, it was Darby Smith (Madoc, Ont.) leading the Varsity Blues to a 2-1 overtime shoot-out win against the scrappy Guelph Gryphons.
After a scramble in front of the Toronto net, Guelph forward Tamara Bell (Guelph, Ont.) was awarded a penalty shot and scored to put the Gryphons up by one.
Smith answered back for the Blues, scoring a power-play goal from Urban and Lindsay Hill (Ajax, Ont.) to tie things up in the second period. The Blues were badly outshot in the third period but Valenta stood on her head to push the game into an extra frame.
With new OUA regulations in place, Toronto played their first shoot-out in regular season competition. The first three shooters solved nothing and under sudden-death pressure, Smith stepped up to score her second goal of the game and secure the 2-1 victory for the Blues.
The Varsity Blues women's hockey team travels to Waterloo next Sat., Oct. 11 to take on the Warriors at 7:30 p.m. The Blues return to Toronto on Sun., Oct. 12 and will host their home opener against the Windsor Lancers at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 5:00 p.m.

WESTERN 2, UOIT 0
LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs bounced back from an opening game loss, beating the UOIT Ridgebacks 2-0 on Oct. 5 at Thompson Arena.
Ellie Seedhouse (Whitby, Ont.) scored for Western, adding an assist on Veronica Johnston's (Oshawa, Ont.) second-period goal.
Mustangs goaltender Jessica Ulrich (Keswick, Ont.) made 20 saves for the shutout, benefiting from Western's strong defensive effort.
The first period produced the most action, but Ulrich and Ridgebacks goalie Carleigh Taggart (Bowmanville, Ont.) stood tall. After a flurry of missed opportunities, Seedhouse opened the scoring, beating Taggart with six minutes to play.
The teams combined for 24 first-period shots, and each side killed four power plays.
The second frame was more of the same, as the parade to the penalty box continued. Each team would finish with 10 minor penalties, and Western would make the Ridgebacks pay early in the period.
Johnston took a pass from Seedhouse at the blue line, then ripped a shot through a crowd past Taggart.
Two goals would prove to be more than enough for Ulrich and the Mustangs, and Western began to control the game.
They outshot UOIT 12-4 in the second period, and finished with 32 shots for the game. The Ridgebacks were forced to shoot mostly from the outside, and Ulrich handled everything that came her way.
Seedhouse had a chance for her second goal on a great third-period chance. She streaked down the right wing, cutting to the middle, before firing a high shot just wide.
UOIT had two power play chances late in the period, but failed to convert. Each team managed only six third-period shots.
The Mustangs next face Laurier in Waterloo on Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. They return home to face the same Laurier squad on Oct. 18 at 4:00 pm.
