LADY HAWKS START W-HOCKEY TOURNEY 2-0
The Golden Hawks first played the Minnesota Thoroughbreds at 11:30 a.m. in a tough match up with the southern team's advantage in size. Caitlin Muirhead (Waterloo, Ont.) led the purple and gold with two goals in the match, the first coming from a successful wrap-around attempt and the second when she muscled her way through the defence and fired a shot to beat the Minnesota goalie.
Laurier's second game of the day came at 7:00 p.m. against the host Bisons. The Golden Hawks were winded but managed to keep the score close thanks in a large part to the return of goalie Cindy Eadie (Brantford, Ont.) to the line-up. Manitoba's Katherine O’Rourke (Winnipeg, Man.) would open the scoring in the second period and give the home team a one-goal advantage which they would hold until Caitlin Muirhead scored to tie the game with just three minutes left on the clock.
With overtime resolving nothing the game would require a shootout to determine the winner. Andrea Bevan (Collingwood, Ont.) would go first for the Hawks and would score with a nifty spinning backhand move. She would be the only skater to notch a goal.
Next up the Golden Hawks will take on the team that finishes second in Pool B at 5:30 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 3.
