OUA W-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: GOLDEN HAWKS WIN BATTLE OF NATIONALLY-RANKED CLUBS
The Golden Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on power play markers. Lauren Barch (Burlington, Ont.) and Andrea Ironside (Collingwood, Ont.) each scored with the man-advantage.
The Varsity Blues battled back in the second period, tying the score 2-2 with a pair of power play goals of their own. Lindsay Hill (Ajax, Ont.) and Darby Smith (Madoc, Ont.) both scored while Golden Hawk players sat in the sin bin.
Perhaps that was the wake-up call the Golden Hawks needed, as they rallied for three unanswered goals in a 3:54 span in the middle of the second period. Vanessa Bennett (Belmont, Ont.), Abby Rainsberry (Petrolia, Ont.) and Barch scored even strength goals to send Laurier into the second intermission up 5-2.
Toronto got one back in the early stages of third period on the power play. Annie Del Guidice (Hamilton, Ont.) scored on assists by Lyndsey Ryan (Ajax, Ont.) and Brenley Jorensen (Kingston, Ont.). But Barch ended any hope of a Varsity Blues comeback with her third goal of the game for the hat trick.
Both teams resume their regular seasons on Jan. 10 following the December break.

QUEEN'S 5, WINDSOR 1
KINGSTON, Ont. - Becky Conroy (Pembroke, Ont.) recorded three points as the Queen's Gaels defeated the Windsor Lancers 5-1 Sunday afternoon at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
Queen's captain Cassandra Sparks (Stouffville, Ont.) opened the scoring at 10:55. Windsor would find themselves in penalty trouble early giving the Gaels seven power plays in the first period alone. Conroy would capitalize on the final power play of the period to give the Gaels a 2-0 lead.
Windsor would settle down and play a more defensive period only allowing five shots in the second but Elizabeth Kench (Gananoque, Ont.) would notch the Gaels third goal of the game.
After a 15-minute delay in between the second and third because of a Zamboni malfunction, the Lancers took full advantage of the rest, as Candace Rapchak (Stoney Point, Ont.) scored just 22 seconds into the third. The goal ended Melissa John's (Unionville, Ont.) shutout streak at 201 minutes.
Conroy would add her OUA leading 12th goal and second of the afternoon, after she took a pass from Kench who made a dazzling play to pass the Lancer defencemen.
Windsor would again find themselves in penalty trouble recording five infractions in the third. With two players in the box the Gaels would take a last minute power play and add their fifth goal off the stick of defencemen Kerstin Van Bolderen (Medina, Ohio) to make the final 5-1.

WESTERN 1, UOIT 0
OSHAWA, Ont. - Lindsey Martin made 32 saves and Holly Ouellette fired home the winner as the Western Mustangs ended the 2008 portion of the regular season with a 1-0 win over the UOIT Ridgebacks.
The Mustangs rebounded from a 1-0 loss to the Queen's Gaels a night earlier.
The win over UOIT snapped a five-game losing streak for Western.
Martin (London, Ont.) has been given an opportunity to tend the twine with an injury to Jessica Ulrich earlier this season. Along with Danielle Le Ber, Martin has been given more action in the Mustangs' net.
The rookie goalie was especially busy in the second and third periods making 12 saves in each frame.
It was a goalie's duel with both goaltenders playing well. Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.) of UOIT made 38 stops in the losing effort.
Ouellette netted her fifth goal of the season early in the third period for the game-winner.
The teams combined to go 0 for 13 on the power play.
