GRYPHONS STUN GOLDEN HAWKS IN GAME 1 OF OUA WOMEN'S HOCKEY FINAL
"Tonight Tori Woods won another game for them," commented Laurier head coach Rick Osborne. "She made a great dangle and a solid shot for the game winner."
The Golden Hawks had lost just one game in 29 OUA games entering the contest.
In the first period, neither team was able to capitalize on their opportunities. The Gryphons earned the first power play on a tripping call to Andrea Bevan (Collingwood, Ont.). The Hawks then earned an advantage of their own, but Guelph goalie Cassandra McNichol (Unionville, Ont.) turned aside all comers.
The goals started to come for both squads in the second frame. Laurier's Heather Fortuna (Kitchener, Ont.) notched her second goal of the playoffs to open the scoring. Guelph's Erin Small (Pickering, Ont.) answered midway through the second, as Laurier netminder Cindy Eadie (Brantford, Ont.) allowed her first goal in five-plus games. The Gryphon's kept coming with Leslie Taylor (Mindenmoya, Ont.) scoring off a rebounded blocked shot to give the and then Woods potted a short handed marker to give the visitors a 3-1 advantage going into the break.
Changing things up in the third period, Laurier pulled Eadie and replaced her with OUA all-star Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.). Laurier's Katherine Shirriff (Carrying Place, Ont.) scored midway through the frame, but it was too little, too late for the Golden Hawks.
Laurier netminders Eadie and Knox turned aside 15 of 18 shots while Guelph goalie McNichol stopped 35 of 37 shots and was named the OUA Harrow Sports Canada Ltd. Player of the Game.
Game 2 of the series will take place in Guelph at the Gryphon Centre on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the gate.
