UOIT RIDGEBACKS WIN FIRST EVER HOME W-HOCKEY GAME
Freshmen Sarah Matthews (Whitby, Ont.) and Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.) were the shootout heroes on the night. Matthews led the skaters as the only player to score in the shootout while Thompson stopped all three Brock shooters to earn the Ridgebacks first home victory.
The loud crowd at the Campus Ice Centre was treated to an excellent game in the 2008 home opener with both teams having a number of scoring opportunities throughout the game. Breanne Hadley (Belleville, Ont.) opened up scoring for UOIT in the first period with a power play goal while Brock managed to level the score at 1-1 midway through the second period as Maggie Matheson scored her first goal of the year.
With both teams playing a tight-checking, physical game, the score remained tied into the late stages of the third period. At the 18:13 mark, Oshawa native Kirstie Smithurst of UOIT found the back of the net giving the Ridgebacks a one goal lead, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Less than one minute later, Brock put the celebration on hold as Kristy Ashton scored to knot up the game once again.
Overtime solved nothing, so a shootout was needed to break the tie. After the first three shooters were stopped, it was Matthews who was able to break the ice and put UOIT ahead. With one last chance to knot the game up, Thompson came up with the big save giving UOIT the 3-2 victory.
It was a night to remember as the Ridgebacks picked up the significant victory in style. Fans went home happy and are looking forward to another great year of OUA hockey action at the Dog Pound!.
The Ridgebacks are now 1-2-0-0 to start the regular season and will head to Toronto for a pair of road games next weekend. UOIT's next home game will be on Saturday, Oct. 25 against the Waterloo Warriors. Puck drop at the Campus Ice Centre is at
7:30 p.m.
