OUA W-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: NO. 9 LIONS END NO. 2 GOLDEN HAWKS RUN AT PERFECTION IN WOMEN'S HOCKEY
"You really have to give York credit, they beat us at our own game," commented Laurier head coach Rick Osborne after the game. "They scored two power play goals and played tough defence throughout the game."
The Golden Hawks (26-1-0) opened the scoring in the game with Candace Kellough (Bolton, Ont.) beating Megan Slumskie (Baden, Ont.) for her eighth of the season. York would get on the scoreboard in the first as well with a two-on-one goal from Lindsay Agnew (Kenora, Ont.).
All tied up in to start the second, the Lions would get the go-ahead goal from Autumn Mills (Thornhill, Ont.). With Lauren Barch (Burlington, Ont.) in the box for hooking, the Laurier penalty kill couldn't clear the puck and Mills gave her team the lead.
Laurier started off the third period by tying the game up. Just 22 seconds in the Hawks attacked the net and caught Slumskie out of position. Kaley Powers (Kingston, Ont.) netted the goal with a backhander into the empty net. York continued to get chances forcing Kate Psota (Burlington, Ont.) to draw an interference penalty. On the ensuing power-play the Lions capitalized, catching Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.) going the wrong way. Mandy Cole (North York, Ont.) scored what would be the game winner.
Knox faced 23 shots, stopping 20 of them for the loss. Slumskie saw 26 and stopped 24 for the win.
York went 2-of-3 with the man-advantage, while Laurier was unable to capitalize on their single opportunity.
Laurier has now finished in first place in the OUA and will now await the winner of the first round of the OUA quarter-finals.

WESTERN 5, UOIT 2
LONDON, Ont. – Lindsey Martin (London, Ont.) turned away 33 shots and Ellie Seedhouse (Whitby, Ont.) scored two power play goals as the Western Mustangs won 5-2 over the UOIT Ridgebacks at Thompson Arena on Feb. 21.
The Mustangs also had goals from Lisa Flanagan (Toronto, Ont.), Whitney Weisshaar (Belle River, Ont.) and Brittany Buck (Etobicoke, Ont.). Western scored four of their five goals on the power play.
The UOIT Ridgebacks were supported by goaltender Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.) while Ridgebacks goals came from Melissa Findlay (Oshawa, Ont.) and Chrissy Tereshyn (Scarborough, Ont.).
The first period was a back and forth battle and resulted in numerous penalties for both teams. Seedhouse scored the first power play goal to take the 1-0 lead when she tapped in a rebound off Thompson's pad.
On Western's first power play of the second frame, Seedhouse waited for the perfect scoring opportunity and hit Meghan Hewins (Burlington, Ont.) with a swift cross-ice pass. Hewins let a shot rip from the point that was blocked by a Ridgebacks defender, but Seedhouse grabbed the rebound and put a quick wrist shot over Thompson's right shoulder.
Martin stood strong in net turning away 33 shots and defending seven Western infractions, but on an unfortunate penalty kill situation, Findlay snuck a goal into the net to make the game 2-1.
Only four minutes later, a dump-in shot by Flanagan was deflected by a Ridgebacks player and redirected into the net to put Western up 3-1.
Weisshaar scored another power play goal off Thompson's toe save early in the third and Buck followed soon after when she put one through a scrum in front of the net.
UOIT's Tereshyn was fed a pass out front and she pushed the puck into the bottom left corner of the net to finish the game at 5-2.
