OUA W-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: NO. 2 GOLDEN HAWKS, NO. 5 GRYPHONS TAKE GAME 1
The Gryphons looked to be in control of the game to start and out-shot the Badgers 56-23 on the night. Despite a 2-0 Guelph advantage heading into the third, the Badgers battled back, scoring two third-period goals to send the game to overtime.
Guelph played a strong first period, skating well and dominating in puck position. Leslie Taylor (Mindenmoya, Ont.) opened the scoring for the Gryphons on a rebound chance at 7:34. The Gryphons were in control of the game from the start outshooting the Badgers 20-5 in the first period.
The Gryphons didn't waste any time in the second period as Patricia Rose Harris (Colborne, Ont.) scored a quick goal only 24 seconds into the start of the period to take a 2-0 lead. Brock would then settle down and play a more defensive period with Guelph outshooting Brock only 10-7 in the period.
In the third period, the Gryphons found themselves in penalty trouble. With two Gryphons in the box the Badgers scored on the power play off the stick of defenceman Maja Samborski (Toronto, Ont.) to cut the Gryphon lead to 2-1. Five minutes later, the Badgers scored the equalizer as centre Kelly Walker (Brampton, Ont.) picked up a loose puck in the slot and sent a beautiful shot past goaltender Cassandra McNichol (Unionville, Ont.) to tie the game 2-2.
An exciting 10 minute overtime featured seven shots from the Gryphon's side as well as several fast-break chances off Badger turnovers. Despite outshooting Brock 7-3, the first overtime solved nothing, sending both teams into the locker room still deadlocked 2-2.
Four minutes into the start of the second overtime, Guelph's Hodgins scored the game-winner on a power play to give the Gryphons the win.
The winner of the best-of-three semi-final series qualifies for the OUA championship.
The series now moves to St. Catharine's as Game 2 will take place Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Brock. If Game 3 is necessary, it will be back at the Gryphon Centre in Guelph on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
