IRONSIDE SCORES WINNER AS NO. 2 GOLDEN HAWKS BLANK NO. 6 GRYPHONS IN WOMEN'S HOCKEY
Laurier also picked up their 24th win of the 2008-09 campaign which is the most in the program's history. The previous record was 23, which was set last season when the schedule was expanded to 27 games from 24 to accommodate UOIT's entrance into the league.
After coming off a tough 3-1 loss to Queen's, the Guelph Gryphons (15-6-2) were ready and waiting to take on the undefeated Golden Hawks. Laurier got on the scoreboard first in this match between the top two teams in OUA. Ironside (pictured) scored with Jacky Sollis (West Vancouver, B.C.) in the box for a hooking penalty. Both teams fought for an advantage over the other and took several minor penalties in the frame, but only the purple and gold were able to capitalize on one of them.
The second period saw both teams continue to battle hard, but refrain from infraction related actions. Laurier continued to pepper their opposing goaltender Cassandra McNichol (Unionville, Ont.) with 20 shots in the period, while Cindy Eadie (Brantford, Ont.) held off the Gryphons five shots.
The OUA's No. 1-ranked defence went to work in the third period shutting down any offensive attempts the Gryphons put together. With frustration ebbing though the Guelph bench as they attempted to score the equalizer, the visitors started to get into penalty trouble. On the Gryphons third straight minor, Caitlin Muirhead (Waterloo, Ont.) scored the Golden Hawks second goal of the game with nine minutes left to play. With the two-goal advantage, Laurier took some penalties to close out the period which Guelph was unable to capitalize on.
All told, Eadie earned her fourth shutout of the season stopping 19 shots while her counterpart McNichol turned away 43 of 45 for the loss.
The Golden Hawks are next in action in their final regular season home game on Sun., Feb. 8 at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex where they will take on the Brock Badgers. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m.
