YORK 4, UOIT 1
TORONTO, Ont. - The York Lions women's hockey teamed evened its record on the season to 2-2 with an impressive 4-1 showing over the UOIT Ridgebacks at Canlan Ice Sports on Saturday afternoon.
It was all about the special teams for the Lions in this game as they scored one power play goal and two shorthanded goals in the contest. Forward Courtney Unruh (Fort St. John, B.C.) had her biggest game of the young season, having a hand in each of the goals scored by York. She tallied her first goal of the year while on the penalty kill and added three assists for a game-high four points.
The Lions actually trailed early on as the Ridgebacks scored the game's first goal on second-year forward Ricki Palmateer's (Cobourg, Ont.) power play goal at the 8:16 mark of the first period. However, the Ridgebacks' lead was short lived as Lions forward Autumn Mills (Thornhill, Ont.) scored a power play goal of her own at the midway point of the opening period. While the first period was competitive in the scoring column, the Lions were dominant in shots on net, out shooting the Ridgebacks 19-11.
The Lions strong play carried over to the second period and they got their first lead of the game when fourth-year forward Jessica Turi (Mississauga, Ont.) scored her second goal of the season.
The third period featured two shorthanded goals for the Lions, both involving fourth-year superstar forward Mandy Cole (North York, Ont.). She gave the Lions a 3-1 lead by putting the puck into the back of the net early in the period and then had a gorgeous assist on another shorthanded goal by Unruh.
Lions goalie Sydney McMurter (Orillia, Ont.) was impressive in the contest, stopping 31 shots while allowing only one goal.

QUEEN'S 4, TORONTO 3
TORONTO, Ont. - The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell 4-3 to the Queen's Gaels in a tightly contested game on Saturday at Varsity Arena.
Toronto started off strong, dominating the play in the first period. Fourth-year assistant captain and Blues player of the game Annie DelGuidice (Hamilton, Ont.) notched her first goal on a power-play when she buried a rebound off an Amy Cornell (Oakville, Ont.) point shot.
First-year forward Callie Bazak (Peterborough, Ont.) took a beautiful pass from linemate Allie White (Metcalfe, Ont.) to give the Blues a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period.
DelGuidice tallied another power-play goal 30 seconds into the second period, skating the length of the ice to put one past Gaels goaltender Melissa John (Unionville, Ont.).
Queen's answered back on the next shift as Elizabeth Kench (Gananoque, Ont.) scored off a point shot from Kerstin Van Bolderen (Medina, Ohio). The Gaels took control and recorded their second goal as Megan McNutt (Ottawa, Ont.) picked up a rebound and found the back of the net. Toronto held a narrow 3-2 lead at the end of the second period.
Two power-play goals from Kristin Smith (Toronto, Ont.) and Kelsey Thomson (Martintown, Ont.) would give Queen's the lead with nine minutes remaining in the game. Despite some solid scoring opportunities, the Blues could not find the back of the net and the Gaels came away with the 4-3 victory.

LAURIER 5, WESTERN 3
LONDON, Ont. - Western fell 5-3 to Wilfrid Laurier in a home-ice defeat at Thompson Arena.
Western came out with a quick start and scored three goals in the first five minutes of play from Ellie Seedhouse (Whitby, Ont.), Holly Ouellette (Toronto, Ont.) and Kaley Sisler (Arkona, Ont.). Laurier fought back as forward Kaley Powers (Kingston, Ont.) popped in two goals, and Alicia Martin (Etobicoke, Ont.) also scored to tie the game.
The Mustangs dropped to 1-4 in the first month of play. Laurier remains graciously undefeated at 4-0.
Western's intense start caught Laurier goaltender Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.) off-guard and she let in a goal within the first 30 seconds. Knox followed by letting off two big rebounds in the starting minutes of the game where Western capitalized and crunched a crucial lead.
Laurier out-shot Western 42-17, but goalie Jessica Ulrich (Keswick, Ont.) stood on her head and held her team in the game - claiming the first-star honour.
Both teams played a physical game, however luck landed in Laurier's hand with only three penalties. Western's power play was no match to Laurier's penalty kill as they only managed to pull out one power-play goal. On the other hand, Western received six penalties and Laurier was able to pull off three power-play goals.
Laurier sealed the game with an empty-net goal in the last minute of play.
