SCHOOL OF HARD KNOX IN W-HOCKEY
Goaltender Liz Knox (Stoufville, Ont.) stopped 41 of the 42 shots on net in the contest including 13 in the third period as the Hawks were out shot 13-1 in the final frame.
Last season Wilfrid Laurier lost the contest against Ohio State 4-1.
"The team played well together for their first competition on the ice," commented head coach Rick Osborne.
Laura Bartolini (Mississauga, Ont.) opened scoring for the purple-and-gold getting on the board early in the contest. At 7:27 she tucked in the loose puck on the left corner of the net after defenceman Andrea Bevan (Collingwood, Ont.) put a shot on net. Katherine Shirriff (Carrying Place, Ont.) picked up the second assist on the goal. Ten minutes later the Buckeye's tied up the contest on a goal tipped in by Hayley Klassen.
Kate Psota (Burlington, Ont.) regained the lead scoring from the left circle off of a pass by Heather Fortuna and Andrea Ironside (Collingwood, Ont.).
Laurier was a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill as well as 0-for-3 on the power play. Post game the teams had a shootout as a warm up to the adapted rules both in the WCHA and OUA. Lauren Barch (Burlington, Ont.) and Psota scored for the Hawks while two OSU players scored on Knox.
The Hawks continue their exhibition campaign in the United States facing Niagara University on Sept. 28 before returning to open the regular season on October 4th at the University of Waterloo. The first home game is on Oct. 10 against the University of Western Ontario.
