KANIS SCORES TWICE IN GUELPH'S W-HOCKEY WIN OVER BROCK
A tough defence, strong goal tending, and a stubborn penalty kill all played part in the Gryphon's victory over the visiting Badgers.
The first period brought hope to a seemingly struggling Gryphon squad. A penalty for Sarah McClinchey (Brampton, Ont.) gave the girls an early scare only 2:45 in, but after killing off their first of three first period penalties, the Gryphons rebounded with a goal. Georgetown, Ont. native Dayna Kanis (pictured) tucked the puck in on the short side thanks to a pass from Tamara Bell (Guelph, Ont.). Guelph`s impressive penalty killers went 3-for-3 to hold the swiping badgers at bay.
Second period fortunes held a less than satisfying outcome for the home team, and even though the Guelph penalty kill had been extremely strong, they were unable to hold off the Badgers on a mid-period 5-on-3 opportunity. With only 0:12 remaining in the penalties to Samantha Ryder (Vancouver, B.C.) and Jody Hodgins (Stayner, Ont.), Badgers forward Kristen Dewsbury (Newmarket, Ont.) was able to force the puck past the Gryphon tender on a thick scramble in front of the net. The game-tying goal brought the lacking Badgers power play to an improved record of 1-for-5.
But with only one minute remaining in the second, the dynamic duo of Kanis and Bell struck again. With now five assists and six points in just three games, Bell set up Kanis in front of the net who capitalized on a diving wrist shot to take the lead 2-1.
Third period action commenced with two more Guelph penalties, both to McClinchey, that the Gryphons were able to kill off. In the third period Gryphons Alix Mullen (Killaloe, Ont.) sent the puck up to Brittney Roberts (Markdale, Ont.) who made a brilliant deke to send Brock goaltender Beth Clause (Hamilton, Ont.) to the ice, giving her a clear shot at the top shelf to put the Gryphons up 3-1. The Badgers would score one more goal when Kelly Walker (Brampton, Ont.) found the back of the net with 0:52 seconds remaining, but it was too little too late for the Badgers, despite nine power play opportunities throughout the match.
Third-year goaltender Kanesa Shwetz (Waskatenau, Alta.) earned the win for the Gryphons with 19 saves, while Clause was impressive turning away 26 shots for the Badgers in the losing effort.
