OUA W-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: U OF T EXTENDS WIN STREAK
The Blues scored on their first power-play opportunity when Sarah Stephen (Pickering, Ont.) sent a low snap shot from the point through a Lindsay Hill (Ajax, Ont.) screen and into the net.
On the next Toronto power-play, Hill sent a booming shot at the Windsor net and second-year forward Karolina Urban (Kamloops, B.C.) was there to bury the rebound.
Minutes later, Scarborough native Amanda Fawns would walk out of the corner and put one through the legs of Windsor goalie Jamie Tessier (Copper Cliff, Ont.) to give the Blues a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period.
The rest of the game went back-and-forth with both teams exchanging scoring opportunities. With Tessier pulled and two Blues skaters in the box, Toronto found themselves down three players late in the third period. The squad rose to the challenge with some stellar defensive play and killed off the six-on-three disadvantage. Urban would pot an empty-net goal and secure the 4-0 victory for the Blues.
Toronto goalie Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) recorded her second shut out of the season and was named the Blues player of the game for her efforts.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Sat., Oct. 18 when they host the Queen's Gaels at Varsity Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

TORONTO 5, WATERLOO 4, OT
WATERLOO, Ont. - Second-year defenceman Bianca Mirabelli (Oakville, Ont.) scored her first career goal with 21 seconds left in overtime as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team edged past the Waterloo Warriors 5-4 on Sat., Oct. 11.
After blocking a shot in her own end, Mirabelli skated the length of the ice and single-handedly beat three Waterloo defenders as she roofed a backhand shot over Warriors goalie Erica Bridgewater (Georgetown, Ont.) for the Blues overtime victory.
In a classic back-and-forth battle, Jo-Ann Scott (New Dundee, Ont.) opened up the scoring as she potted Waterloo's first goal of the game. Second-year forwards Lindsay Hill (Ajax, Ont.) and Karolina Urban (Kamloops, B.C.) scored for the Blues before fifth-year Warriors veteran Sarah Bryson (Kitchener, Ont.) potted one of her own. The game was tied 2-2 at the end of the first period.
Waterloo would take the lead five minutes into the second, however Madoc, Ont. native Darby Smith would even things up on a Blues power-play. Smith received a direct face-off win from Emily Milito (Ottawa, Ont.) and sent it into the top corner of the Warriors net.
Randi Lynn Wilson (Dublin, Ont.) gave the Warriors their last lead before fourth-year assistant captain Annie DelGuidice (Hamilton, Ont.) scored with less than three minutes to go to send the game into overtime.

YORK 3, WINDSOR 1
TORONTO, Ont. - The York Lions women's hockey team got its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon in its home opener, defeating the Windsor Lancers in an impressive 3-1 performance.
The Lancers opened the scoring a power play goal by second-year forward Darris Ford (Echo Bay, Ont.) at the 1:10 mark of the first period. This was certainly not the way the Lions wanted to start off after starting the season 0-2 on the road last weekend. However, the Lions battled back and refused to lose its third consecutive game as it went on to score three unanswered goals and get its first win of the season.
Lions forward Danielle Beach (Port Perry, Ont.) knotted matters up at the 14:30 mark of the first period as she was set up by the precision passes of Riley Edwards (Kenora, Ont.) and Autumn Mills (Thornhill, Ont.).
Both teams were scoreless in the second period, setting up a decisive third period in which the Lions took control early, taking the lead for good at 1:50 mark on a goal by Mandy Cole (North York, Ont.) that was assisted by first-year forward Jennifer Petkovics (Missisauga, Ont.). The Lions got some insurance mid way through the third period as third-year forward Joanne Becker (Toronto, Ont.) gave York a 3-1 lead. The Lions shut the door defensively the rest of the way and held on for the triumph.
Next weekend the Lions are home again for a pair of games against the UOIT Ridgebacks on Saturday (Oct. 18, 2 p.m.) and on Sunday (Oct. 19, 2 p.m.) against the Queen's Gaels.

WATERLOO, Ont. - Laurier's No. 3 nationally-ranked women's hockey team took to the ice at the Waterloo Recreation Complex and welcomed the Western Mustangs in their home opener. An out-of-sync Hawk team managed to find their chemistry late and skated to a 4-1 win, despite a strong challenge from the Mustangs throughout much of the game.
Watching the game and watching the scoreboard would have given fans very different views on the night. Despite doubling the Mustangs in shots, the game remained close through the early frames.
The Hawks struck early, just 27 seconds in on a shot from Heather Fortuna (Kitchener, Ont.) that floated up and over the shoulder of Jessica Ulrich (Keswick, Ont.). The purple and gold had momentum and laid the pressure on, but Ulrich bounced back from the shaky start and made some timely saves in close, flashing the glove hand several times.
Western knotted the game at one mid-way through the first, after a scramble in the crease left Laurier tender Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.) on the ice and Chantal Morais (Guelph, Ont.) managed to squirt the puck under Knox and over the line.
The Mustangs had a prime opportunity to down the Hawks with over-lapping 5-on-3s midway through the second, but Knox was equal to the task and strong back checking negated any chance the Mustangs could muster.
Shortly following the defensive stand, against the flow of play Laurier went ahead and got the eventual game-winner from Abby Rainsbury (Petrolia, Ont.), much like Western's marker, a free-for-all for the puck in the slot found its way to Rainsbury who just managed to put it away.
Laurier would follow with Heather Fortuna's second of the game, a power play marker thanks to a tic-tac-toe setup from Andrea Bevan (Collingwood, Ont.) and Kate Psota (Burlington, Ont.). Laura Bartollini (Mississauga, Ont.) would get her first of the year off a deflected shot as she was crashing the net.
The win moves the Golden Hawks to 2-0 on the season, and the third-ranked squad nationally will now play a non-conference series with Team Ontario, before resuming league play next week at Western and then home against the Lancers of Windsor.
