OUA W-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: FORTUNA HAT-TRICK LEADS NO. 3 HAWKS PAST MUSTANGS
"There is something about our starts against Western," commented head coach Rick Osborne. "The last time we played against them we were down three-nothing in the first five minutes. They come hard."
The team played Windsor on the road yesterday to a 1-0 win and travelled back to Laurier after the game to arrive in Waterloo at 3:00 a.m.
The Mustangs jumped on the road-weary Hawks early with two goals on their first three shots on net. Both came from Ellie Seedhouse (Whitby, Ont.), the first on a two-on-none break and the second after the puck hit the cross bar and landed in front of her. Laurier continued to struggle in the period, giving up several more chances. Towards the end of the period, Fortuna caused a turnover in the Mustangs zone and took the puck to the net. The Kinesiology major made a quick move and went to the backhand, putting the puck past Jessica Ulrich (Keswick, Ont.) with 57 second left in the frame.
The second period resolved nothing for either team. The purple and gold took several penalties, but were able to kill them off successfully.
Laurier finally began to play like themselves in the third period. Candace Kellough (Bolton, Ont.) entered the Mustangs zone down the right hand side and went straight to the net. She fired a wrister at the goalies blocker side, to ring it off the post and in. The goal boosted the home team's confidence and Laurier started to attack the Mustangs aggressively. Laurier earned their second power play of the game next, and made the visitors pay. Two Hawks took the puck to the net and Ulrich made the save, but the puck squirted out to Kate Psota (Burlington, Ont.), who fired it into the net past a screened netminder. The power-play marker would stand up as the game-winner. The Hawks would continue to roll as Fortuna scored two more to earn her hat-trick and take the team lead in scoring with 10 goals this season.
The purple and gold went 2-of-3 with the man-advantage and went 1-of-6 on the penalty kill.
Ulrich made 29 stops on 34 shots, while Laurier netminder Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.) turned away 15 of 17.
The Golden Hawks will next be in action against the Brock Badgers at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex on Sat., Jan. 17. The puck drops at 3 p.m.

YORK 4, NO. 5 GUELPH 3
TORONTO, Ont. - The York Lions women's hockey team came twice from behind to beat the Guelph Gryphons 4-3 at home on Sunday, upsetting the No. 5-ranked team in the CIS and improving its record to 8-10 on the season.
Lions third-year forward Autumn Mills (London, Ont.) scored two goals, including the game winner, while Courtney Unruh (Fort St. John, B.C.) notched a pair of assists.
The Gryphons (11-3-2) opened the scoring late in the first period – taking advantage of their one-woman advantage in the power play – when Jackie Sollis (West Vancouver, B.C.) sent an excellent pass to team captain Rose Harris (Colborne, Ont.), who then put the puck past Lions goalie Megan Slumskie (Kitchener, Ont.). The lead was extremely short-lived, however, as the Lions equalized in the next possession when rookie Chloe Milano (Maple, Ont.) beat the Gryphons with a slap shot that was assisted by Unruh and Mandy Cole (Peterborough, Ont.).
The second period saw the same trend continue, with the Gryphons taking the lead once again when Dayna Kanis (Georgetown, Ont.) scored mid-way through the period. The Lions tied the game at two apiece when Mills received a pass from Unruh with less than two minutes left in the period, this despite the Gryphons outshooting the Lions 20-10 in the second period.
The third saw a complete shift in momentum as the Lions maintained pressure on the Gryphons defence. However, the attacking intent left a hole in the defence and the Gryphons took the lead for the third time in the game in just a minute and a half in when Jessica Zarafa (Mississauga, Ont.) got her name on the score sheet with a goal.
Once again, the Lions refused to be bogged down, and equalized a minute later thanks to a goal by Jennifer Petkovics (Mississauga, Ont.), who could consider herself lucky as the Gryphons goalie let the puck slip through her legs on what was a soft shot.
The Lions took the lead for the first time in the game at the 7:12 mark of the third when Mills scored her second goal of the game on a simple tap in courtesy of a great run and pass by Danielle Beach (Port Perry, Ont.).
The Gryphons took two timeouts in the final few minutes, trying to set up strategies to draw level, but the Lions held on for an important win.
The Lions' season continues next week when they travel to Kingston when they face the Queen's Gaels in back-to-back games on Friday (Jan. 16, 7:30 p.m.) and Saturday (Jan. 17, 2:30 p.m.).

NO. 8 TORONTO 1, BROCK 0
TORONTO, Ont. - Amanda Fawns' third-period goal would be all the Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team needed to defeat the Brock Badgers at Varsity Arena.
Blues rookie goaltender Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) set the stage for the rest of the game when she stopped Badgers forward Maja Samborski's (Toronto, Ont.) breakaway attempt to keep things scoreless in the first period.
Toronto turned up the heat in the second period as all three forward lines created solid scoring opportunities but were unable to convert, hitting only crossbars and posts. Valenta again kept the game scoreless, stopping a one-time shot off a Badgers 2-on-1 with 30 seconds left in the second frame.
The play went back and forth in the third period with both teams itching for that elusive first goal.
With 6:38 seconds to go in regulation, Fawns (Scarborough, Ont.) walked off the half boards and sent the puck through traffic to beat Badgers goaltender Beth Clause (Hamilton, Ont.) for what would be the eventual game winner.
Valenta's job would not end there as she stopped Brock's leading scorer Kelly Walker's (Brampton, Ont.) breakaway attempt with just under five minutes to go and made an outstanding glove save off a defensive zone face off to finish the game.
Fawns was named the Blues player of the game and Valenta made 25 saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Sat., Jan. 17 when they travel to Oshawa to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

UOIT 3, QUEEN'S 0
KINGSTON, Ont. – It was a night of "firsts" for the UOIT Ridgebacks women's hockey program on Saturday night as the team picked up a 3-0 victory over the Queen's Gaels in Kingston.
UOIT goaltender Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.) picked up UOIT's first shutout in the women's hockey program's history turning aside 32 shots. The win also marked UOIT's first series victory over an OUA opponent as the Ridgebacks won two of three games against the Gaels this season. In the three games, UOIT outscored Queen's 10-5. The win also marked UOIT's first road win of the season.
Described by the coaching staff as a total team effort, the Ridgebacks looked very impressive in their first game of 2009. Melissa Bell (Cobourg, Ont.) opened up scoring just four minutes into the game, giving the Ridgebacks the early lead. Early in the second period, it was the UOIT freshmen taking control of the game as Kara Carter (Whitby, Ont.) scored her first OUA career goal, assisted by Emily Bremer (Barrie, Ont.) and Sarah Matthews (Whitby, Ont.). Jackie McArthur (Oshawa, Ont.) added an empty net goal in the third period to seal up the 3-0 win.
This season, Thompson has picked up all three wins for UOIT, while posting a .914 save percentage in 14 games. She has faced 442 shots this year, second most in the OUA.
The Ridgebacks are now 3-14-0 heading into a tough weekend series at home against the Toronto Varsity Blues (9-5-0) and Laurier Golden Hawks (16-0-0). Saturday night's game against U of T (7:30 p.m.) will be Oshawa Lady Generals night at the Campus Ice Centre.
