OUA W-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: HAWKS BEAT BLUES AND LIONS
The first match-up saw the purple and gold play against their provincial rival, the Varsity Blues, who they last faced for the Ontario championship. The home team was fired-up and ready to play, but Andrea Bevan (pictured) from Collingwood, Ont. put the Golden Hawks up eight minutes in to spoil the solid start. Laurier continue to pressure the Blues and Heather Fortuna (Kitchener, Ont.) scored a second marker to give the Lady Hawks a 2-0 advantage. The Blues out shot the visitors 12-9 in the period.
The second period was a defensive battle for both teams. Each netminder only saw six shots each on their respective nets as the game was played between the blue lines for most of the frame. The final period saw the Varsity Blues mount an impressive offensive display, firing 19 shots on goalie Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.). The Hawk netminder would turn away all comers to earn her sixth shutout of the season.
The match only had five infractions called, for a total of ten minutes.
In the second game against the York Lions, Laurier would again gain an early advantage with a goal scored just six minutes in from Andrea Ironside (Collingwood, Ont.), with assists going to Lauren Barch (Burlington, Ont.) and Alison Williams (Whitby, Ont.). The Hawks dominated the play out shooting the Lions 17-9.
York would have an answer in the second period as Chloe Milano (Maple, Ont.) would score a shorthanded goal on Knox to end 185 minutes of shutout hockey. The marker would tie the game and set the Golden Hawks on their heels. Alicia Martin (Etobicoke, Ont.) would answer the call with a goal to return the lead to the purple and gold with two minutes left in the period. Both teams goalies would face 11 shots on net.
The Lions would continue to battle, but the Golden Hawks stymied their offensive charges. Laurier worked hard and, after York pulled their netminder to gain the extra attacker, would score their third goal of the match from Ironside.
York's Megan Slumskie (Baden, Ont.) saved 39 of 41 shots while Laurier's Knox stopped 33 of 34.
The Golden Hawks went 0 for 6 with the man-advantage while the Lions went 0 for 3.
