OUA W-HOCKEY ROUNDUP: SHUTOUTS THEME OF OPENING DAY
The Ridgebacks came out flying in the first period and had a number of scoring opportunities including two breakaways but Windsor goalkeeper Jamie Tessier (Copper Cliff, Ont.) was up to the test as the teams would play to an 0-0 draw after one.
The teams remained tied for the majority of the second frame until fourth year veteran Darris Ford (Echo Bay, Ont.) opened up scoring at 14:17 off a turnover to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead. Less then two minutes later, Windsor would add a power play marker by Candace Rapchak (Stoney Point, Ont.) to give them a two goal lead heading into the final period.
Early in the third period, UOIT was given a golden opportunity to get back into the game as Windsor was called for too-many men on the ice. Ford spoiled their plan as she netted her second goal of the game to put the game on ice.
Freshman Emma Thompson (Hastings, Ont.), who made her debut in net for UOIT stopped 33 shots in the losing effort. The Lancers would outshoot UOIT 36-21.

GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons women’s hockey team started their 2008-09 campaign off on the right foot defeated the York Lions 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Gryphon Centre.
The Gryphons went ahead early on a goal from first year Jessica Zerafa (Mississauga, Ont.) on a good drive to the net with patience and beat the York tender high blocker side. Guelph dominated the play for most of the period fighting off three penalties but were unsuccessful on two power play attempts.
The second Gryphon goal came late in the first on a screened point shot by Jody Hodgins (Stayner, Ont.). Late in the second period York got on the goalsheet on a power play goal from Jessica Turi (Mississauga, Ont.) off a scramble in front of the net with three seconds left in the Gryphon penalty.
In the third period Guelph maintained possession of the puck in their end. Zerafa scored her second of the day on an amazing shot to put Guelph up 3-1. York scored their second goal off the tape of Samantha Solheim (Kelowna, B.C.) with three minutes left in the game. In the final seconds, Tori Woods (Orangeville, Ont.) made a great shot block to clear our zone and Rose Harris (Colborne, Ont.) scored the empty netter from centre ice to clinch the victory.

TORONTO 2, BROCK 0
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Brock women’s hockey team kicked off the regular season this afternoon with a valiant effort against the No. 6 CIS-ranked Toronto Varsity Blues, but were defeated 2-0.
Karolina Urban (Kamloops, B.C.) opened the scoring for Toronto 10:39 into the second as she capitalized on a rebound in front of the net. Annie DelGuidice (Hamilton, Ont.) added an insurance marker early in the third as she tipped in a shot from the point by Amy Cornell (Oakville, Ont.).

Brock carried the play for the majority of the third period but was unable to beat Toronto goaltender Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) as she earned her first win and shutout of the season.
On a positive note, the Badgers are still yet to give up an even strength 5 on 5 goal this year, a stretch that has now lasted over 4 games.
