OUA CELEBRATES WOMEN'S HOCKEY ALL-STARS AND MAJOR AWARD WINNERS
HAMILTON, Ont. - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announce the 2008-09 women's hockey All-Stars and major award winners.
Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks fifth-year defenceman Andrea Bevan (Collingwood, Ont.) is the 2008-09 OUA Player of the Year, presented by Harrow Sports Canada Ltd. Bevan led all OUA blueliners with eight goals and 18 assists for 26 points in 27 games this season. Her assists total ranks third among all OUA players, and her 11 helpers on the power play led the conference. Bevan was one of five OUA players that were members of Canada's women's hockey team that won gold at the 2009 Winter Universiade in Harbin, China last month. Bevan is also a member of the OUA First Team All-Stars.
Tamara Bell (Guelph, Ont.) of the Guelph Gryphons is the 2008-09 OUA Rookie of the Year. The left wing was OUA's co-leader in points with 33 this season. Bell led the conference with 20 assists, while her 13 goals ranked her eighth among goal scorers. She headlines the OUA All-Rookie Team.
Teammate Dayna Kanis (Rockwood, Ont.) is the recipient of the Marion Hillard Award for her achievements in hockey, academics, and community service. Kanis volunteers with a number of organizations in Guelph and the surrounding community. She was a part of Guelph's "Take Back the Night" march in November and also spends time working as a volunteer at hockey camps and events. She also took on a role as a residence assistant and has influenced the lives of many first-year students in a positive way. The Psychology student is a two-time recipient of the Quest for Gold scholarship, and intends on working towards a Master's degree focusing on researching and developing female leaders in the community. The Gryphons assistant captain scored 14 goals and helped out on 13 others during the regular season.
Richard Osborne of Laurier is the OUA Coach of the Year for the fifth straight season. The Golden Hawks were the class of OUA most of the season, falling one victory short of a perfect regular season campaign after winning 26 straight games (26-1-0-0). Laurier led the conference in goals with 108 (the only OUA team to crack the century mark) and gave up the least amount of goals (21). Laurier has finished in first place in OUA in each of the past five regular seasons.
Joining Bevan as First Team All-Stars are forwards Andrea Ironside (Collingwood, Ont.) and Lauren Barch (Burlington, Ont.) of the Golden Hawks and Annie DelGuidice (Hamilton, Ont.) of the Toronto Varsity Blues; defenceman Kelsey Webster (Duncan, B.C.) of the York Lions; and goaltender Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.) of Laurier. Ironside was the OUA co-leader in points with Bell, while Barch finished one point back in the scoring race with 32. DelGuidice was the Varsity Blues leader in points with 26, and finished fifth in OUA in assists with 17. Webster scored six goals from the blue line and Knox led OUA with a goals against average of 0.93. Ironside, DelGuidice and Webster were teammates of Bevan at the Winter Universiade.
OUA Second Team All-Stars include forwards Kanis and Jessica Zerafa (Mississauga, Ont.) of Guelph and Mandy Cole (North York, Ont.) of York; defencemen Carla D'Angelo (Hamilton, Ont.) of Guelph and Lyndsey Ryan (Ajax, Ont.) of Toronto; and goaltender Beth Clause (Hamilton, Ont.) of the Brock Badgers.
Joining Bell as the conference's top rookies are forwards Chloe Milano (Maple, Ont.) of the Lions and Abby Rainsberry (Petrolia, Ont.) of the Golden Hawks; defencemen Julia Endicott (Toronto, Ont.) of the Waterloo Warriors and Maja Samborski (Toronto, Ont.) of the Badgers; and goaltender Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) of the Varsity Blues.
