FORMER CFL PLAYER MIKE MORREALE JOINS THE SCORE
HAMILTON, Ont. – Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced today that former CFL great and McMaster Marauder alumnus Mike Morreale will join The Score for the upcoming football season as lead analyst on University Rush telecasts.
The two-time Grey Cup champion and former Canadian Football League Outstanding Canadian will work alongside long-time play-by-play announcer Tim Micallef, who returns for a seventh season.
“Canadian university football is near and dear to my heart, and I’m excited to be close to the action once again,” said Morreale. “The Score has done an impeccable job the last several years showcasing the unique atmosphere of OUA games on television, whether it’s the exciting play on the field or the energy in the stands. I look forward to joining a winning team.”
Morreale played 12 seasons in the CFL, all in Southern Ontario with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Toronto Argonauts. As a member of the Marauders, the Hamilton, Ontario native was a two-time OUAA All-Star, a team MVP and an All-Canadian. He was also named to McMaster’s Football Team of the Century and Hall of Fame.
Micallef has been the lead play-by-play voice since the show’s inception and is also the co-host of The Score Tonight and The Score on the NFL. Micallef and Morreale will be joined on the sidelines by former Western Mustang running back D.J Bennett who will begin his second season on The Score.
University Rush returns with a bang on September 6 when for the first time ever, the network will air not one, but two games to kick off its seventh year of coverage of OUA football. It is the first of 11 OUA games to be showcased nationally, commencing with the 101st Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Petroleums on November 8.
The 2007 season was arguably the most intriguing in the history of OUA as the No. 6-seed Western Ontario Mustangs defeated the No. 5-seed Guelph Gryphons 34-21 to win the 100th Yates Cup, concluding a series of upsets that took place the entire OUA playoffs. Casualties of both Western and Guelph’s Cinderella run included the No. 2 nationally-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees and the No. 5 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. The Mustangs lost their opening four games of the regular season, only to battle back with four straight wins just to secure a playoff berth. Western continued its dramatic run with road victories against the Queen’s Gaels, Ottawa and Guelph to claim the 27th Yates Cup title in school history.
Last year’s Yates Cup Finalists will be on full display to open the 2008 season, as Queen’s visits Guelph at 1 p.m. in the first half of the doubleheader. Since 2001, the Gaels have a 5-1 record in head-to-head meetings against the Gryphons, including a 26-14 victory last year. Later that evening, Western faces Laurier in the first meeting between these schools in two seasons. The Mustangs will be looking to put the brakes on a five-game losing streak at the hands of Golden Hawks beginning at 7 p.m.
On September 13, the McMaster Mauraders will showcase their new home field as Ottawa pays a visit to Ron Joyce Stadium for a 7 p.m. start. McMaster will be looking for some measure of revenge after the Gee-Gees handed the Mauraders a humbling 60-7 loss across town at Ivor Wynne Stadium in 2007.
McMaster will remain on The Score the following week as the Mauraders travel up Highway 6 to Guelph to battle the Gryphons. Both teams had a memorable meeting in the OUA quarterfinals last October, when Justin Dunk scored on a last-minute touchdown run to give the Gryphons a 25-21 win. Game time is 1 p.m. on September 20.
On September 27, two of the OUA’s oldest rivals lock horns as Western visits Queen’s at 1 p.m. The Gaels opened the 2007 season with an 26-20 overtime victory against the Mustangs, only to have their season ended in the OUA quarterfinals as Western won 27-19. Both road teams were victorious against the other.
Both Laurier and Ottawa return to The Score to open October in a clash of OUA titans. The Golden Hawks and Gee-Gees have won three of the past four Yates Cups, and had just one loss between them during the 2007 regular season. That was Laurier’s 27-15 defeat at home at the hands of Ottawa. The October 4 game starts at 12:30 p.m.
The final two weeks of the regular season are reserved for games with playoff implications. The Score will air games on October 11 and 18 that will be announced at a later date.
One and done time begins on October 25, as The Score showcases an OUA quarter-final playoff game, followed by a semi final game on November 1. The OUA season concludes on November 8 in the 101st Yates Cup Championship presented by Pioneer Petroleums. All game times are TBA.
