OUA FOOTBALL: QUEEN'S WINS FIRST PLACE SHOWDOWN
With the win No. 4 Queen's moves to 5-0 which they have not done since 1989 and remain the only undefeated team in the OUA. No. 2 Western falls to 4-1.
Mike Giffin (Kingston, Ont.) scored three touchdowns and ran for 69-yards in what turned out to be a lopsided Gaels victory. With the three touchdowns, Giffin now becomes Queen's all-time leading touchdown scorer with 31 career majors passing Queen's alumnus Paul Correale (1995-99).
The key play of the game came in the second quarter with Queen's up 9-1 and Western charging. Gaels free-safety Alex Daprato (Toronto, Ont.) intercepted a Michael Faulds (Eden Mills, Ont.) on the goal-line and returned the ball 94-yards. That play saw Giffin score his second of the game and put momentum on Queen's side.
"It was the consequence of being at the right place at the right time," said Daprato. "Definitely a momentum changer."
"Daprato's interception was the turning point in my mind," continued Sheahan. "It's going to be 9-8 if they scored. He turned it around and we go up 16-1. That was a huge play in the ball game."
On the next series with T.J. Leeper (London, Ont.) recovered a Faulds' fumbled forced by Osi Ukwuoma (Mississauga, Ont.) setting up a Dan Brannagan (Burlington, Ont) touchdown pass to Chris Ioannides (Toronto, Ont.) to make it 23-1 Queen's at the half.
Western rebounded in the second-half with John Lackie (Georgetown, Ont.) scoring twice to make the score 23-14 early in the fourth quarter.
Later, with Dan Village (Abbotsford, B.C.) set to make a 41-yard field goal, head coach Pat Sheahan opted to run a fake. Jimmy Allin (Belleville, Ont.) took the snap on the fake and ran for a first down with just under seven minutes left. Scott Stinson (North Bay, Ont.) scored two plays later on Brannagan's second touchdown pass to put the nail in the coffin.
Village added two field goals while Giffin record his third and record breaking touchdown to make the final score 43-16.
Brannagan finished the day 16 for 36 with 148 yards passing and no interceptions. He also scrambled four times for a total of 32-yards

Faulds had a difficult day for the Mustangs going 30 for 57 with 386-yards passing, but more importantly was sacked four times and threw four interceptions.
Turnovers spelled defeat for the Mustangs as they Queen's defence forced five fumbles, had four interceptions and stopped the Mustangs three times on third down conversions.
"Unbelievable defence today," said Sheahan. "Our kids knew we weren't going to shut them down, it, was more slow them down. Bend but not break."
Queen's homecoming crowd was an undeniably the thirteenth player in a nationally televised game. Whether it was the boom from the bagpipes or the roar of the crowd, Western could not swing the momentum in their favour.
The home-field advantage was undeniable. Whether it was boom from the bagpipes in the background or the roar of the crowd, Western could not swing the momentum in their favour.
After five games, Queen's holds sole possession of first place, while Western is alone at 4-1 in second place. Ottawa, Wilfrid Laurier and Windsor are all 3-2. McMaster, Toronto and Guelph are all 2-3. Waterloo is 1-4 and York is 0-5.
NOTES: Giffin's regular season streak of 100-yards or more comes to an end at 14. Ironically Western held Giffin to 49-yards in last year's playoff last loss…. Queen's has now scored 35 points or more in each of its five victories this season. Western held Queen's off the board in the third quarter, marking the only time this season the Gaels have been rendered pointless in any quarter… The last time Western lost by 20 or more points in the regular season was in 2004 against McMaster, a 53-32 regular season loss in the season opener.

WINDSOR 40, NO. 5 OTTAWA 38
WINDSOR, Ont. - The Windsor Lancers Football team pulled off a shocking upset Saturday afternoon as they defeated the No. 5 nationally-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees 40-38.
In front of 1,523 fans at Alumni Field, the Lancers took advantage of six Ottawa turnovers, including 5 interceptions off of Gee-Gees quarterback Josh Sacobie (Fredericton, N.B.) to earn the victory. With the win, the Lancers moved into a tie with Ottawa for 3rd in the OUA standings.
The first quarter started out a slow for both teams, as both teams struggled to find rhythm in their offences. Lancers quarterback Sam Malian (LaSalle, Ont.) was intercepted once while Sacobie threw 3 interceptions in the quarter. The biggest for the Lancers was picked by defensive back Bryan Quayson (Mississauga, Ont.) and returned 17 yards to the Ottawa 22-yard line. After that, running back Daryl Stephenson (London, Ont.) did all the work, completing the drive with a six-yard run for a touchdown to give Windsor a 9-3 lead.
That was only the beginning of the scoring as the teams combined to score 48 points in the quarter. The good news for Lancer fans was it was Windsor doing the majority of the scoring. They extended their lead on the very next play following the
Stephenson touchdown as defensive back Matt Bucknor (Hamilton, Ont.) returned a fumble for a touchdown to stretch the lead to 13.
After that, Malian took over for the Lancers, hitting his favourite targets Jordan Brescacin (Tecumseh, Ont.) and Glenn MacKay (Burlington, Ont.) for back-to-back touchdowns to give Windsor a 30-3 lead. The Lancers weren't finished yet as defensive lineman Seamus Postuma (Thunder Bay, Ont.) punched it in from the one-yard line to give the Lancers a seemingly insurmountable 37-3 lead.
However, the Gee-Gees demonstrated why they are one of the top teams in the country scoring two touchdowns 29 seconds apart to cut into the Windsor lead and pull within 21 points at the half.
Ottawa continued to push back into the game as a field goal, a 51-yard run for a touchdown from running back Felix Potivn-Desjardins (Gatineau, Que.), and a conceded safety made it 37-27 after three quarters.
In the fourth, the Lancers regained some confidence on offence as Stephenson found some holes in the Ottawa defence, pushing Windsor into field goal range. Kicker Robert Eeuwes (Burlington, Ont.) nailed a 32-yarder to stretch the lead back to 13.
After a stunning 70-yard completion by Sacobie to wide receiver Ron Kelly (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), Potvin punched in
his second touchdown of the game to once again give Ottawa life. But from this point on, the Lancers defence stood strong, stopping the Gee-Gees twice in the last five minutes inside the Lancers 40-yard line.
A pair of conceded safeties made it a two-point game with two seconds left in the game but the last gasp effort from Sacobie was knocked down, giving the Lancers their biggest victory of the season.
For the Lancers, Malian went 15 of 23 for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Stephenson ran the ball for 136 yards and one touchdown while receivers MacKay and Brescacin had 77 and 89 yards respectively and a touchdown each.
For Ottawa, Sacobie threw for 353 yards but was intercepted five times while throwing for one touchdown. Running back Potvin-Desjardins carried the Gee-Gees on the ground with 126 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

LAURIER 38, WATERLOO 23
WATERLOO, Ont. – Quarterback Luke Thompson (London, Ont.) connected for 357 yards as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks defeated the University of Waterloo Warriors 38-23 in front of a Waterloo homecoming crowd of 2,200 at Warrior Field.
"There were so many times today when I through [the ball] up there and they weren't the prettiest balls today but our receivers came through and made the play," commented Thompson on his overall performance. "The strength of our offence is our receivers and we've got to continue to get the ball to them and they will continue to make great plays."
Thompson found three different receivers before scoring a touchdown of his own on the ground. The second year pivot connected 17 of 26 attempts including four touchdowns and a 57 yard reception in the wet penalty filled contest. In total 24 penalties for 208 yards were assessed to both teams with the Hawks picking up the majority at 14 for 145.
"We're very fortunate to come out of [Warrior Field] with the win," said Laurier manager of football operations and head coach Gary Jeffries. "Full credit to the Waterloo coaches and players for the game they played today. We've got a lot of talent but we aren't playing to that level right now - we're going to. I'm happy we got the win, but disappointed at the way we played."
Shamawd Chambers (Markham, Ont.) named Laurier's Ray Owens memorial player of the game, led the offence with 119 yards in receptions including a 37-yard touchdown reception. Chambers leads the team in both receptions and touchdowns with 27 and four on the season.
"Waterloo came hard at us today like we expected, with their homecoming and their fans," said Chambers post-game. When asked about the penalties, including an unnecessary roughness that he was assessed, he showed a little more disappointment in the tone of his voice stating that "At the end of the day the penalties shouldn't happen, but they did, and we'll have to work on them in order to become a more disciplined team."
Earlier in the contest Troy Leach (Barrie, Ont.) caught two touchdown receptions within one-minute. Just before the quarter-break, he had a 34-yard reception, and after, a 42-yard catch to start the second after Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) picked up one of his two interceptions of the day. Shane Burns (Burlington, Ont.) had the other off of Warrior quarterback Evan Martin (Kitchener, Ont.). Burns also led the team with seven tackles (six solo) on the day.
Martin moved the ball for 318 yards over 23 completions and was sacked three times by Steve Cormack (Waterloo, Ont.), Spencer Troop (Georgetown, Ont.) and Joe Labeski (Welland, Ont.). Marvin McCoory (Mississauga, Ont.) led the black and gold on the ground with 77 yards and a major.
After going up early in the contest 14-2, the Hawks weren't able to get back the momentum they needed, getting caught deep in their own zone and conceding multiple safeties.
"They had a couple of plays on us and stuck it in the end zone and we didn't help with some of the errors we made," stated Jeffries. "They were successful in stopping our momentum multiple times, however in the fourth our guys made some key plays."
Laurier's kicking game saw Chris Mamo (London, Ont.) have 11 kickoffs as a result of all the safeties. Mamo also hit the uprights twice in the contest on field goal attempts, with only one of the two falling between for the points.
Ryan Lynch (Waterloo, Ont.) was just short of 100 yards on the day as he carried the ball 17 times for 83 yards including a 30-yard carry late in the game. Josh Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.) had the final seven-point grab on a 30-yard pass.
"Today was like two steps forward and one back," said Thompson on the penalty situation. "If we can limit that we'll be fine next week in Ottawa."

GUELPH 30, VARSITY BLUES 0
GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons football team blanked the Toronto Varsity Blues 30-0 at Alumni Stadium in rainy and damp conditions on Saturday (Sept. 27) afternoon. Guelph moved to 2-3 on the season, while the Varsity Blues drop to 2-3.
After last week's defensive meltdown in the fourth quarter against the McMaster Marauders, the Gryphons were not about to let that happen again. In fact, in their return to Alumni Stadium the Gryphon defence allowed no points against the Varsity Blues, even while Toronto had possession of the ball for over 60 percent of the game. To compliment their fantastic defensive play, the offence did their part in putting points on the board while Guelph kicker Rob Maver (Brampton, Ont.) was perfect on the day booting three field goals on three attempts.
The excitement got started early on in the game, when Guelph quarterback Justin Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) hit wideout Jedd Gardner (Niagara Falls, Ont.) for a huge 91 yard touchdown, just 3:34 into the game. Gardner added yet another productive day to his resume, racking up 147 yards on five catches as well as the big touchdown.
Although it was mostly back and forth football for the next 23 minutes of play, thanks in no small part to the dominating play of the Gryphon defence, Maver would eventually make the score 10-0 on a 31-yard field goal with just over three minutes to play in the second half.
But he wasn't done just yet, as the kicker would boot another three points as time was expiring to make the game 13-0, sending both teams to the locker rooms. Maver also contributed to the great play of Guelph's special teams as he punted the ball eight times for a 44.6-yard average including a 60-yarder.
Guelph would continue their effective play calling on offence in the second half as running back Nick Fitzgibbon (Puslinch, Ont) plunged the ball in from one yard out midway through the third quarter, putting Guelph up 20-0. Although Fitzgibbon was pulled from the game with an apparent shoulder aggravation early in the fourth quarter, he still capped off a productive day on the ground, rushing for 109 yards on 15 carries.
The lone bright spot for the Varsity Blues was the outstanding play of multi-purpose Mark Stinson (Calgary, Alta.), a modern day football renaissance man. Stinson carried the ball 12 times for 55 yards, caught two balls for 27 yards, and added nearly a dozen punts on the Toronto special teams unit. Despite the all around efforts of Stinson, Toronto just could not get anything going on offence, settling for punts on nearly every possession.
Midway through the fourth quarter Maver would kick his third field goal of the game, this time from 27 yards out. Under three minutes later a scrambling Dunk would find slotback Zack Stacey (Burlington, Ont.) all alone on the left sideline, who ran the ball into the end zone for a 30-yard score making the score 30-0. At this time Dunk's day as signal caller was over as Coach Kyle Walters put in back-up quarterback Kurtis Dance (Guelph, Ont.) to finish off the game.
Dunk was 13 of 23 on the day for 246 yards and two touchdowns to one interception, helping his team improve their record to 2-3 on the season. Worth noting defensively was the play of defensive end Grant MacDonald (London, Ont), who created havoc on the line registering two sacks, two pass break-ups, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Additionally, linebacker Adam Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) chalked up seven solo tackles and a forced fumble.
