OUA FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENCE: Ryan Fantham, McMaster Marauders, Quarterback
McMaster quarterback Ryan Fantham (London, Ont.) returned from injury with a 13-point deficit, and under four minutes remaining to lead the McMaster Marauders to a 32-31 victory over the Guelph Gryphons in front of 7,292 fans at Guelph's Alumni Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Fantham (pictured) threw for four touchdowns including a clutch 52-yard bomb to Andrew Ross (Burlington, Ont.) with 58 second left in the game to cap the Marauders come-from-behind victory. Fantham completed 24 of 42 passes for 283 yards on the day to give McMaster their first victory of the season after dropping their first three games.
DEFENCE: Lee Shaver, Ottawa Gee-Gees, Defensive Back
Lee Shaver (Ottawa, Ont.), the third-year defensive back, had a team-high 5.5 tackles with an interception in the Gee-Gees 59-0 home shutout Saturday afternoon against the Waterloo Warriors. The youngest of three brothers to play for the Gee-Gees, Shaver is a first-year starter. It was Ottawa’s first shutout victory since 2005 when the Gee-Gees defeated Toronto 72-0 on Oct. 8.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Brad Fochesato, McMaster Marauders, Receiver
With McMaster trailing 31-18, first-year receiver Brad Fochesato (Lasalle, Ont.) tackled Guelph kicker Rob Maver (Brampton, Ont.) before he could get his punt off on his own 20-yard line. The turnover set up a five-yard touchdown pass (on third and five) from McMaster quarterback Ryan Fantham to Kevin D'Hollander with 2:28 remaining in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 31-25 and give the Marauders the momentum. McMaster would go on to win the game 32-31.
