OUA RELEASES 2009 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE
The two-time defending OUA champion Western Mustangs will visit the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sept. 6 at Frank Clair Stadium in the nation's capital in an evening showdown prior to Labour Day. When these teams last met, it was the Mustangs winning their 28th Yates Cup title by a score of 31-17.
It is the second consecutive regular season that the Mustangs and Gee-Gees open against each other, and the third time in four years. The Mustangs came back to defeat the Gee-Gees on home turf by a score of 35-31on Labour Day in 2008. It is the first regular season meeting between these clubs in Ottawa since 2006. Game time is 7 p.m. on Sept. 6.
The remaining OUA teams will open their 2009 seasons on Labour Day, including an evening game in Toronto, where the Varsity Blues will host the Laurier Golden Hawks. It was on this day in 2008 that the Varsity Blues ended their CIS-record 49-game losing streak with an 18-17 win over the Waterloo Warriors.
The Varsity Blues will play under the lights four times in 2009, including three games on home turf at Varsity Centre. A total of 10 OUA games will be played at night, one more than the previous season.
Western's home opener will also be a rematch of a 2008 playoff game as the Laurier Golden Hawks visit TD Waterhouse Stadium in London on Sept. 12. The Mustangs upended the Golden Hawks 36-28 in an OUA semi final back in November.
The much-anticipated Battle of Waterloo will take place on Sept. 19 as the Golden Hawks host the Warriors at University Stadium in the Tri-Cities. It will mark the first visit by the Warriors to their old home since moving to Warrior Field in 2008. The Queen's Gaels will also visit the Gee-Gees on this day. Ottawa ended Queen's run at a perfect 2008 season with a 23-13 win in an OUA semi final.
Sept. 26 will feature another playoff re-match as the McMaster Marauders host the Golden Hawks. Both teams put on the best single-game offensive display of the 2008 regular season, as Laurier defeated McMaster at home 50-31. Laurier then proved its defence prowess by blanking McMaster 29-0 in an OUA quarter-final.
The 38th annual Red and Blue Bowl will take place on the campus of York University as the Lions host the Varsity Blues on Oct. 3. The Varsity Blues won their first Argo Cup in 12 years with a 58-7 victory over York at Varsity Centre last September.
The Thursday before Thanksgiving will feature three games under the lights, including York visiting Western, Laurier hosting the Windsor Lancers and Toronto traveling to McMaster. The following evening on Oct. 9, Ottawa hosts the Guelph Gryphons in a rematch of their 2008 OUA quarter-final. The Gee-Gees defeated the Gryphons 42-37 on the strength of Davie Mason's (Brampton, Ont.) OUA playoff record 327 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
The only OUA team to defeat Western in 2008 was Queen's. The Mustangs will once again make the trek east to Kingston to battle the Gaels in the second-to-last game of the regular season on Oct. 17.
The final regular season games will be played Oct. 24. Eight teams remained in the hunt for playoff berths the final weekend of last season, and it is expected to be just as competitive in 2009. OUA fans responded with a total of 151,065 individuals going through football turnstiles in 2008, up five percent from 2007.
Teams not scheduled to meet during the 2009 regular season include Guelph-Windsor, McMaster-Ottawa, Queen's-Toronto, Waterloo-Western and Laurier-York.
The OUA quarter-finals are scheduled for Oct. 31, the OUA semi finals on Nov. 7, and the 102nd Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Petroleums will take place at the home of the highest-remaining seed on Nov. 14.
