LANCERS LOSE FOOTBALL SHOCKER TO WATERLOO
Despite holding a 23-1 halftime lead, the Lancers (3-4) were outscored 29-6 in the second half to fall to the Warriors (2-5) on Alumni Field.
On Friday night, after Waterloo got on the board with a single in the first quarter to go ahead 1-0, the Lancers reeled off 23 straight points to hold a 23-1 lead.
Fifth year senior Glenn MacKay (Burlington, Ont.) sparked the offence for Windsor as he returned a Waterloo punt 83 yards for a touchdown to go ahead 10-1.
Lancer running back Daryl Stephenson (London, Ont.) then rumbled into the end zone on a six-yard run to put the Lancers up 17-1 in the second quarter.
Kicker Robert Eeuwes (Burlington, Ont.) added two late field goals to stake the Lancers to the 23-1 lead at the break.
The second half was all Waterloo just as it was a year ago as Justin Andrushko (Nanoose Bay, B.C.) scored on a 25-yard run to cut into the Lancer lead 23-8 in the third quarter.
Waterloo added another touchdown only nine seconds into the fourth quarter as Marvin McCooty (Mississauga, Ont.) scored on a three-yard run to make the score 23-15.
With eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and the Lancers in field goal position on the Waterloo 28-yard line, Windsor decided to pass and Sam Malian (LaSalle, Ont.) fumbled the ball to give Waterloo the turnover and keep their hopes alive.
The Warriors made the Lancers pay for that mistake as Luke Blach (London, Ont.) connected on a 23-yard pass play into the end zone to Sean Cowie (Burlington, Ont.) to cut the lead to 26-22.
The Lancers would add a late field goal to go ahead 29-22, but then suffered costly penalties for unnecessary roughness after having the Warriors pinned deep in their end.
Again, Waterloo made Windsor pay as they took the ball the length of the field and McCooty scored on a one-yard run to make the score 29-28.
With no chance to earn a playoff berth, the Warriors decided to go for two and converted on a pass play with 33 seconds left in the game to earn the 30-29 victory.
In the loss, Malian completed 10 of 25 passes for 106 yards.
Stephenson carried the ball 20 times for 136 yards and a touchdown while MacKay caught 3 passes for 47 yards.
The Lancers will be back in action next Saturday as they travel to Hamilton, Ont. to battle the McMaster Marauders.
