OUA FOOTBALL: RIVA RIPS BLUES
With the win, Western (6-1) locks up a top-two finish in the OUA trailing undefeated Queen's in the battle for first place. The 6-0 Gaels can lock up first overall with a win over either Ottawa (3-3) on Oct. 11 or Toronto (2-5) on Oct. 18.
The Mustangs built a 56-0 through three quarters lead thanks to a four-touchdown performance from running back Nathan Riva (LaSalle, Ont.).
The freshman sensation now has seven touchdowns in his past two games. His biggest scoring play came on a 52-yard scamper. He also scored on a nine-yard run and two one-yard carries. He finished with 114 yards on 15 carries with four majors.
Other touchdowns came from Zach Bull (Port Colborne, Ont.), on a 30-yard pass from quarterback Michael Faulds (pictured) from Eden Mills, Ont.; Jesse Bellamy (Guelph, Ont.), on a two-yard pass from Faulds; Dan Duff (London, Ont.), on a seven-yard carry; and Jonathan Hood (Mississauga, Ont.), with a 55-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Matt Carapella, a fifth-year safety from London, Ont., tied the OUA record for most career interceptions at 21 - the mark was previously held by Peter McNabb who played at Toronto and Queen's in the early 1970s. Bob Coffin of the Saskatchewan Huskies holds the CIS record of 24 set from 1970-74.
Adrian Kaiser (London, Ont). had 10 solo tackles, a sack and an interception to lead the Mustangs defence which only surrendered 15 points, all in the fourth quarter with the game out of reach.
Nick Trevail (London, Ont.) led all Mustangs receivers with eight catches for 117 yards while Faulds finished the day going 22 of 29 for 280 yards and a pair of touchdown throws.
Western host Guelph on Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. at TD Waterhouse Stadium and will then enjoy a bye in the opening round of the playoffs on Oct. 25, before hosting an OUA semi-final game on Nov. 1 at 1 p.m.
