OUA FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENCE: David Hamilton, Toronto Varsity Blues, Quarterback
Quarterback David Hamilton has his best game as a Varsity Blue, throwing for 465 yards on Saturday afternoon versus the visiting York University Lions. The 58-7 victory snapped a 12-game losing streak against the Lions and helped the Blues reclaim the coveted Argo Cup. The Mississauga-native completed 22 of 32 passes with four touchdowns, no interceptions, and rushed six times for 36 yards. The fifth-year pivot connected with his receivers three times in the first quarter, and converted his final major of day with a 19-yard strike to second-year receiver Michael Prempeh early in the third. A Human Biology student, Hamilton is currently ranked fourth amongst CIS quarterbacks with 910 yards, completing 64 percent of his passes with only one interception and no sacks. Hamilton has led the Blues to a 2-1 record in the early stages of the OUA football season. The last time Toronto was 2-1 to start the season was 1993.
DEFENCE: Dee Sterling, Queen’s Gaels, Defensive Tackle
Dee Sterling of Kingston, Ont. had 5.5 sacks in a 41-7 Queen’s win over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks at Richardson Stadium in Kingston on Saturday. Sterling also broke a team record in sacks surpassing alumni Jim Aru and Marc Mitchell who both had four in a single game. Overall he accumulated over half of Queen’s total sacks in what was a nine-sack effort from the Gaels defence. He added 6 individual tackles while assisting on four for a total of 10 on the day. Altogether Queen’s tallied 26 individual tackles.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Rob Maver, Guelph Gryphons, Kicker/Punter
Rob Maver, a third-year kicker from Brampton, Ont. was impressive on the weekend in the Gryphons 34-8 win over the Windsor Lancers on Saturday. In tough conditions that involved torrential rain and strong winds, Maver averaged 48 yards punting and went two-for-two in field goals. Maver is currently sitting in the number one spot in the CIS punting average category.
