OUA FOOTBALL ROUNDUP
With the win, Western improves to 3-0. Waterloo falls to 1-2.
Western quarterback Michael Faulds threw 22 of 35 with three touchdowns and 290 yards as the Mustangs scored 14 first-quarter points - their first points in the opening 15 minutes this season.
Two Mustangs ran for over 50 yards - John Leckie (Georgetown, Ont.) ran 15 times for 89 yards, while Nathan Riva (LaSalle, Ont.) ran eight times for 72 yards.
Leckie had four catches for 75 yards for 158 total yards.
Vaughn Martin (London, Ont.), a defensive end, scored a Western offensive touchdown from two yards out on the ground, while Faulds (Eden Mills, Ont.) also scored once on the ground.
Nick Pasic a rookie receiver from London, Ont., caught five passes for 102 yards and a touchdown, while fellow rookie receiver Nick Trevail caught five passes for 40 yards and one touchdown.
Pasic was thrilled with the performance.
"I've been asking a lot of questions trying to keep getting better," said Pasic, who came to Western originally intending to be a quarterback. "I didn't think I was cutting it at quarterback so... I was encouraged to make the change."
It paid off. He looked like a savvy veteran and held onto the ball despite taking heavy hits.
"I taped my fingers like (former Oakland Raider) Tim Brown," Pasic said. "I couldn't use a towel because it got too wet and was really heavy hitting against my leg."
"I'm just grateful to get the opportunity and thankful to be able to help the team."
Western was dominant on special teams with sophomore kicker Darryl Wheeler (Hamilton, Ont.) kicking for 252 total punting yards. He also kicked five field goals.
Safety Craig Butler (London, Ont.) who filled in for injured starting safety Matt Carapella, had one return for 56 yards that set up a Mustang touchdown.
Waterloo totalled just 168 yards of total offence. Sophomore kicker/punter Dave Sevigny (Peterborough, Ont.) was busy, he punted the ball 17 times for 572 yards.
Warriors backup quarterback Luke Balch came in relief of starting quarterback Evan Martin (Kitchener, Ont.), who was 9 of 25 for 86 yards, in the second half. The London, Ont., native was 5 of 10 for 62 yards.
The Mustangs received the opening kickoff and started with good field position at their own 39 yard line.
With a heavy rain warning in effect, with between 40 and 80 mm expected, both teams struggled on their opening possession going two and out. It was a trend throughout much of the game with many dropped passes and fumbled kick and punt returns.
Following strong running from Leckie, Pasic picked up three consecutive first downs with great inside catches, before Trevail capped off the drive with a great catch on a high seven-yard strike from Faulds.
Western earned a 7-0 lead at 9:50 of the opening quarter.
Butler had a huge 57-yard punt return before Faulds connected with Leckie for a 35-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 14-0 with just under seven minutes left in the first.
Not only did the Mustangs score 14 first-quarter points, they combined for 119 yards of total offence early on.
With the rain pounding down on the brave faithful fans at TD Waterhouse Stadium, several near touchdown passes were dropped by Jesse Bellamy (Guelph, Ont.) on consecutive drives. The rain was wreaking havoc for the players.
The lead could have been bigger.
Early in the second quarter, Wheeler booted a 29-yard field goal to extend the lead to 17-0.
After a big block from Martin on a Leckie run, the defensive end, who is often used in red-zone situations leapt in to score a touchdown on second down from two yards out to give Western the 24-0 cushion.
"He has been blocking so well, I told him we'd make it up to him by giving him a chance to run," said head coach Greg Marshall.
Faulds threw his first interception of the season - after throwing a career-high 15 in 2007 - with 4:30 left in the second quarter as Waterloo's Mitch Nicholson (Grand Haven, Mich.) jumped in front of a well-thrown ball to give Waterloo possession near midfield.
After a controversial pass interference call, Sevigny kicked a 29-yard field goal to make it 24-3 for Western with 2:19 left in the half. It was Waterloo's only scoring play of the day.
Late in the half, Zach Bull (Port Colborne, Ont.) began to get involved with nice, short hook and slant patterns to get the ball inside Waterloo territory. Leckie than ran the ball to the Waterloo 28-yard line. Bellamy finally got back into his reliable rhythm, on a short screen pass to get the ball inside the red zone with just under 30 seconds left.
Leckie then got the ball to the 11-yard line with 19 seconds left on a screen pass and ran the ball to the Waterloo three-yard line. He capped off the drive with a touchdown-run to give Western the 30-3 lead.
Wheeler appeared to score on the two-point convert, but the referee ruled him down before the ball crossed the line.
Western led 30-3 at the half.
Early in the third quarter, Pasic pulled in a 41-yard Faulds pass to extend the lead to 37-3.
Wheeler added four field goals in the second half. Many second-string players for Western saw the field in the fourth quarter, including Donnie Marshall at quarterback, the eldest son of head coach Greg Marshall.
The young Marshall got his first snap early in the fourth quarter with 13:40 remaining, an incomplete pass attempt deep to Bull.
Marshall was 2 of 5 for 61 yards in his fourth-quarter debut.

Giffin also posted a touchdown and now leads the CIS in touchdowns with four and rushing with 472 yards.

From that point on it was all Queen's with Valberg scoring twice and Scott Stinson (North Bay, Ont.) recording a touchdown mid-way through the third quarter.
