KEY BATTLE BETWEEN GEE-GEES AND HAWKS ON UNIVERISTY RUSH
The Golden Hawks are having a back-and-forth season winning 15-13 over Guelph, losing 31-20 to Western, getting shutdown by Queen's 41-7, and coming back with a 33-18 win over Windsor on Hawk Homecoming weekend. Most recently the Hawks ruined Waterloo Warrior Homecoming winning 38-23.
Quarterback Luke Thompson (London, Ont.) connected for 357 yards, hitting three different receivers before rushing to score a touchdown of his own. Thompson connected 17 of 26 attempts including four touchdowns in the rainy, penalty-filled contest. The Hawks picked up 14 penalties for 145 yards.
"Today was like two steps forward and one back," said Thompson on the penalty situation. "If we can limit that we'll be fine in Ottawa."
Shamawd Chambers (Markham, Ont.) was named Laurier's Ray Owens Memorial Player of the Game. Leading the offence with 119 receiving yards including a 37-yard touchdown reception, Chambers is also the team leader in both receptions (27) and touchdowns (4) on the season.
Troy Leach (Barrie, Ont.) caught two touchdown receptions within one minute of each other. Just before the quarter-break he had a 34-yard reception, and started the second with a 42-yard catch.
Warrior quarterback Evan Martin (Kitchener, Ont.) gave up three picks on the day. Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) had two, while Shane Burns (Burlington, Ont.) nabbed the third. Burns also led his team with seven tackles.

Josh Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.) had the final seven-point grab on a 30-yard pass from Thompson.
Martin was sacked three times by the Hawks. Steve Cormack (Waterloo, Ont.), Spencer Troop (Georgetown, Ont.) and Joe Labeski (Welland, Ont.) all took turns taking out Martin.
To start the 2008 season, Ottawa sought revenge after the Western Mustangs ended the Gee-Gees undefeated season in the OUA Semi Final last year. Ottawa fell at the hands of the horsemen again this year, 35-31. They bounced back from the narrow loss trampling York 71-3, inching past McMaster 22-19 on University Rush, and blanking Waterloo 59-0. Last weekend, the Gee-Gees made the long drive down the 401 to face what appeared to be a struggling Windsor club, only to lose the decision 40-38.
The first-ever loss to the Lancers put an end to a three-game win streak, and likely cost the Gee-Gees home field advantage for the OUA playoffs.
Josh Sacobie (Fredericton, N.B.) threw a career-worst five interceptions and suffered a bruised left arm on the last play of the game that was first thought to be a break. In his 42nd career Gee-Gees start, Sacobie threw three picks in the first quarter before his fourth in the second led to a benching in favour of backup Brad Sinopoli (Peterborough, Ont.).
Sacobie, who finished 25 for 41 with 353 yards, returned to throw six straight completions and his 76th career touchdown pass into the hands of converted quarterback Cyril Adjeity (Ghana). Defensive back Marcel Johnson (Ottawa, Ont.) fell on the ball in the end-zone off a punt blocked by fifth-year Graham Voth (Kenora, Ont.) as Ottawa ended the half trailing 37-16.
"We have to defend the pass, manage the football, and play for 60 minutes," said Gee-Gees head coach Denis Piche. "We can fold or we can rally."
Ottawa came back with 11-unanswered points in the third quarter. Rookie running back Felix Desjardins-Potvin (Gatineau, Que.) scored off a 51-yard run for his first career Gee-Gees major, the Lancers conceded their first of three safeties and rookie kicker Luigi De Lellis (Ottawa, Ont.) added a 14-yard field goal.
As hard as they fought even a 70-yard fourth-quarter completion from Sacobie to receiver Ron Kelly (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) that set up Desjardins-Potvin's six-yard score and two more conceded Windsor safeties in the final two minutes couldn't bring Ottawa back for the win.
Defensively, Lee Shaver (Ottawa, Ont.) had 5 tackles on the day.
The Gee-Gees, penalized 13 times for 196 yards, finished with 30 first-downs to the Lancers 17.
In regular season play, Ottawa has gone 4-3 over Laurier since 1999. When they met last year, undefeated Ottawa marched over the Hawks 27-15. With a four-way tie for third place, there is no margin for error in the final three weeks of the OUA regular season. Join play-by-play announcer Tim Micallef, analyst Mike Morreale and sideline reporters D.J Bennett and Glenn Schiiler this Sat., Oct. 4. The Score goes live for kickoff at 12:30 p.m. The game is presented by Belairdirect Car Insurance.
