OUA FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENCE: Mike Giffin, Queen’s Gaels, Running Back
Mike Giffin (Kingston, Ont.) recorded two touchdowns along with 18 carries for 143 yards in a 35-11 victory against McMaster on Labour Day. Giffin, who was drafted 17th overall in the 2008 CFL Canadian Draft by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, had an average carry of 7.9 yards with his longest a 57-yard scamper. His two touchdowns were the difference in the game as McMaster tallied only 14 points and Giffin's touchdowns were both before the half.
DEFENCE: John Surla, Western Ontario Mustangs, Linebacker
With a key sack late in the fourth quarter, and a timely fumble recovery earlier in the game, consistent pressure on the quarterback and overall excellent pass rushing, two break-ups and 7.5 tackles, John Surla (Niagara Falls, Ont.) was a big reason behind Western's come-from-behind 35-31 win over Ottawa and overall defensive success. The second-year linebacker was second on the team in tackles along with his break-up, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a sack. He was also very good in limiting Ottawa’s running game.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Andrew Lomasney, Toronto Varsity Blues, Kicker
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues first-year kicker Andrew Lomasney (pictured) from Toronto, Ont. connected on biggest kick of his life, a 32-yard field goal with 26.2 seconds left in regulation to give the Blues an 18-17 lead over the visiting Waterloo Warriors. His field goal solidified an opening day victory for Toronto, the first since 1995, and snapped a 49-game losing streak.
