OUA FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENCE & SPECIAL TEAMS: Jedd Gardner, Guelph Gryphons, Receiver
Jedd Gardner, a second year receiver from Niagara Falls, Ont. was instrumental in the Gryphons 37-22 win over Waterloo on the weekend. Gardner was the top receiver making several acrobatic catches, tallying 175 yards on 7 receptions. The Business student made the highlight play of the day returning a missed field goal 125 yards in the third quarter to deflate the Waterloo comeback, and clinch the victory. Gardner is third in CIS receiving with 705 yards on 32 catches and four touchdowns.
DEFENCE: John Surla, Western Mustangs, Middle Linebacker
Middle linebacker John Surla (Niagara Falls, Ont.) was the exclamation point on a dominating defensive effort from the Western Mustangs in a 58-5 win over Windsor on Oct. 4 at Homecoming in front of 11,406 fans at TD Waterhouse Stadium. Holding Windsor, a team which had recorded 40 points over nationally ranked Ottawa just a week early, to just five points, Surla led Western's defence with a pair of sacks along with 5 tackles (2 solo, 6 assisted), a forced fumble and 2 knockdowns. His rush-stopping speed and efficient tackling held All-Canadian running back Daryl Stephenson (London, Ont.) to just 67 yards on 15 carries.
