OUA BY THE NUMBERS
7 – The number of consecutive Hec Crighton Trophy winners from OUA schools, prior to Saint Mary’s quarterback Eric Glavic winning the honour in 2007. OUA athletes who won the top individual football award in Canada include Kojo Aidoo (McMaster, 2000), Ben Chapdelaine (McMaster, 2001), Tom Denison (Queen’s, 2002 and 2003), Jesse Lumsden (McMaster, 2004), Andy Fantuz (Western, 2005) and Daryl Stephenson (Windsor, 2006).
2,320 – The number of yards defending OUA MVP Josh Sacobie threw for with the Ottawa Gee-Gees in 2007. Sacobie needs 2,261 passing yards this season to set a new career CIS record. He is also 25 passing touchdowns from the all-time mark.
336 – The number of rushing yards Daryl Stephenson needs to break the all-time CIS record. Dominic Zagari of Manitoba holds the all-time career mark of 4,738 yards set between 1991 and 1995. Stephenson enters the season as the all-time OUA rushing champion with 4,402 yards.
3 – Number of former Hec Crighton Award nominees playing in OUA this year. Along with Ottawa’s Josh Sacobie and Windsor’s Daryl Stephenson, former Acadia Axeman and AUS MVP Ivan Birungi will play with the Ottawa Gee-Gees in 2008. Birungi was the top player in Atlantic Canada in 2005 and 2006.
2 – The number of individuals who make their OUA head coaching debuts on Labour Day. Greg DeLaval has taken over the reigns of the Toronto Varsity Blues, while Mike McLean will lead the York Lions.
5 – Consecutive victories by the Laurier Golden Hawks on opening day, the longest active streak in OUA. Laurier's last loss in a season opener came in 2002 in an 18-16 defeat against arch-rival Waterloo.
24 – The number of consecutive years defending Yates Cup champion Western Mustangs have made the post-season, the longest active streak in OUA. The last time Western did not make the playoffs was in 1983.
49 – Number of consecutive losses by Toronto Varsity Blues, a CIS record. The last time U of T has tasted victory in football was on Oct. 13, 2001 when the Varsity Blues defeated Windsor at home 13-11.
11 – The number of overtime shootouts since 2002, the year the format was introduced in OUA football. The last time teams needed extra time was on Sept. 3, 2007, when Queen’s defeated Western on the road 26-20.
1 – The number of times since 2000 that a team has lost the season opener and won the Yates Cup in the same year. Western did the trick in 2007. The last team to achieve the same feat was Waterloo in 1999.
