MCMASTER LOOKS FOR FIRST ââ?¬Å?Wââ?¬Â? ON UNIVERSITY RUSH
The McMaster Marauders (0-3) look to put one in the win column in the fourth game of the season. The Marauders fought hard for a comeback last Saturday, but fell short with a 22-19 loss to the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees (2-1) on University Rush. The first Marauder home game of the season marked the grand opening of Ron Joyce Stadium and the return to the McMaster campus, after playing at Ivor Wynne Stadium for the past three seasons.
McMaster put pressure on the No. 6 ranked Gee-Gees as quarterback Ryan Fantham (London, Ont.) had an excellent game completing 16 of 27 passes for 269 yards and a touchdown. Matthew Perressini (Hannon, Ont.) had 5 receptions for 66 yards, while receiver Kevin D’Hollander (London, Ont.) finished the game with 46 yards receiving on a single reception resulting in a first-quarter touchdown for the Marauders.
Defensively, McMaster’s Ryan Chmielewski (St. Catharines, Ont.) had a game high 8 tackles and added an interception. Daniel Baronas (St. Catharines Ont.), playing in his first game for the Marauders had 6 tackles, and Byron Metcalfe (Pickering, Ont.) had 3 tackles and an exciting 51-yard return on an interception.

While it was another loss, it was an improved effort by McMaster. The Marauders lost 35-11 at Queen’s and 30-17 at Waterloo to begin the season, and did not reach the end zone until the fourth quarter in both games. The Marauders have not been winless entering their fourth game of the season since 1997. They have not lost four games in a season since they went 4-4 in 1998.
The Guelph Gryphons (1-2) come into this match up fresh off the 34-8 slaying of the University of Windsor Lancers (2-1). The Gryphons showed strength offensively, pushing back the Lancers defence all game.
Quarterback Justin Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) complete 8 of 15 passes, connecting with Jedd Gardner (Niagara Falls, Ont.) in the second quarter for a touchdown. Dunk would add a 38 yard rush of his own for a touchdown in the third. Rookie quarterback, Kurtis Dance (Guelph, Ont.) proved you are only as good as your last pass, or in his case only pass of the game, as he put one into the hands of Michael Fortino (Niagara Falls, Ont.) for a touchdown.
Keeping the Lancers at bay was no trouble as the Guelph defence allowed only 1 point in the first three quarters. James Savoie (Niagara Falls, Ont.) led the Gryphons defensively with eight solo tackles while Michael Miller (Port Colbourne, Ont.) and first-year Jordan Duncan (Toronto, Ont.) added four solo tackles apiece.
Gryphons kicker/punter Rob Maver (Brampton, Ont.) was named the OUA Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts against the Lancers. In tough conditions that involved torrential rain and strong winds, Maver averaged 48 yards punting and went two-for-two in field goals. Maver is currently sitting in the number one spot in the CIS punting average category.
Like the Marauders, the Gryphons make their second appearance on University Rush this season. Guelph lost an entertaining 41-30 game against Queen’s on Sept. 6, as Dunk put on a passing clinic with 23 completions for 449 yards and three touchdowns. Nick Fitzgibbon (pictured) from Puslinch, Ont. was Dunk’s weapon of choice, as he caught 5 passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns, to go along with his 111 rushing yards. He currently sits second in OUA and CIS rushing with 397 yards.
When the Marauders travelled to Alumni Stadium last year, they squeezed by the Gryphons 37-36. Since the 2001 season, McMaster has gone 5-1 in head-to-head competition with Guelph. The atmosphere is expected to be electric for the annual Homecoming game. The Ohio Northern University marching band will be performing at halftime.
Join play-by-play announcer Tim Micallef, new analyst and former CFL great Mike Morreale and sophomore sideline reporter D.J Bennett this Sat., Sept. 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and is presented by Pioneer Petroleums.
