2008 OUA FOOTBALL ALL-STARS
On the strength of their undefeated regular season, the Queen's Gaels dominate the OUA All-Star team with 10 First Team and six Second Team All-Stars. The offence is led by Queen's version of The Triplets; quarterback Dan Brannagan (Burlington, Ont.), running back Mike Giffin (Kingston, Ont.) and wide receiver Scott Valberg (Kingston, Ont.). Brannagan was second in OUA passing yards with 2,407, and led the nation with 24 touchdowns via the air. Valberg caught 11 of those touchdowns to lead Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). He was also the only receiver in CIS to break the 1,000-receiving yard mark in 2008. Queen's running attack was equally dominant, as Giffin led OUA with 1,061 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground.
To be dominant on offence, you need a solid offensive line. The Gaels boast this with First Team All-Stars Dan Bederman (Toronto, Ont.) and Vince DeCivita (Gormley, Ont.) and Second Team All-Star tackle Colin Boyle (Ottawa, Ont.).
Defensively, the Gaels dominate the All-OUA defensive line, with defensive tackle Dedrick Sterling (Kingston, Ont.) and defensive ends Osie Ukwuoma (Mississauga, Ont.) and Neil Puffer (Kingston, Ont.) earning First Team status. Ukwuoma led OUA in sacks with 9.5, while Sterling contributed 7.5. Linebacker Thaine Carter (Nanaimo, B.C.) is also named on the First Team.
Jimmy Allin (Belleville, Ont.) is a double All-Star recipient, being named to the First Team as a kick returner and the Second Team as a cornerback. He led OUA with 638 punt return yards. Place kicker Dan Village (Abbotsford, B.C.), SAM linebacker Chris Smith (Toronto, Ont.), defensive halfback David Rooney (Kingston, Ont.) and rush/cover Tim Poffley (Kingston, Ont.) are other Queen's representatives on the Second Team. Village led OUA with 90 points.
The 101st Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Petroleums will showcase 16 OUA All-Stars. The Western Mustangs are second to Queen's in total number of All-Stars with 11. Four of these players are on the First Team defence, including defensive tackle Vaughn Martin (London, Ont.), linebacker John Surla (Niagara Falls, Ont.), defensive halfback Corey McNair (London, Ont.) and free safety Matt Carapella (London, Ont.). Inside receiver Jesse Bellamy (Guelph, Ont.) is also named to the First Team.
CIS passing champion Michael Faulds (Eden Mills, Ont.) and three of his protectors, centre Ahmad Jaradat (London, Ont.), guard Andy Rady (London, Ont.) and tackle Richard Zulys (Toronto, Ont.) are named Second Team All-Stars. Faulds threw for 2,596 yards during the regular season. Defensive Mustangs on the Second Team include defensive tackle Mike Van Praet (London, Ont.) and cornerback Josh Foster (London, Ont.).
The Ottawa Gee-Gees, decimated by injuries in 2008, will have five All-Stars at the Yates Cup. Offensive guard Frank Spera (Montreal, Que.) is named to the First Team, while inside receiver Cyril Adjeity (Ghana), defensive tackle Sébastien Tétreault (Granby, Que.), defensive end Ian Hazlett (Ottawa, Ont.) and linebacker Mike Cornell (Hamilton, Ont.) are all members of the All-OUA Second Team. Cornell led OUA with 53.5 tackles.
Guelph Gryphons teammates Jedd Gardner (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and Rob Maver (Brampton, Ont.) join Allin as double All-Star recipients. Garner is a First Team All-Star as a wide receiver and Second Team All-Star as a kick returner. He was third in CIS receiving with 812 yards and punt return yards with 505. Maver is a First Team All-Star place kicker and punter. He led CIS with 3,090 punt yards and OUA with 18 field goals. Guelph has a dozen First Team All-Stars in total, including running back Nick Fitzgibbon (Puslinch, Ont.), defensive halfback James Savoie (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and cornerback Sean Riley (Burlington, Ont.).
Seven Laurier Golden Hawks are named OUA All-Stars. Offensive tackle Scott Evans (Cambridge, Ont.), SAM linebacker Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and cornerback Taurean Allen (Etobicoke, Ont.) are named to the First Team, while inside receiver Josh Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.), wide receiver Shamawd Chambers (Markham, Ont.), punter Chris Mamo (London, Ont.) and free safety Courtney Stephen (Brampton, Ont.) earn Second Team nods.
Other First Team All-Stars include offensive tackle Matt Morencie (Windsor, Ont.) of the Windsor Lancers, inside receiver Mark Stinson (Calgary, Alta.) of the Toronto Varsity Blues and rush/cover Simon Binder (Almonte, Ont.) of the McMaster Marauders. Binder is a double All-Star, as he is named to the OUA Second Team as a linebacker. Offensive guard Mike Hoy (Kitchener, Ont.), inside receiver Kevin D'Hollander (London, Ont.), running back Joey Nemet (Burlington, Ont.) and defensive end James Edwards (Hamilton, Ont.) also represent the Marauders on the Second Team. Former Hec Crighton Award winner and all-time CIS rushing leader Daryl Stephenson (London, Ont.) of the Lancers, wide receiver Joshua Svec (Blenheim, Ont.) of the Waterloo Warriors and defensive halfback Derek Batchelor (Mississauga, Ont.) of the Varsity Blues complete the Second Team. Svec was second in CIS receiving yards with 864.
