GEE-GEES OPEN WOMEN'S SOCCER SEASON WITH WIN
With six of 11 starters returning and 15 players overall, the Gee-Gees scored four goals on eight shots in the first half without giving up a shot against.
Fourth-year midfielder Racheal Swetnam of Halifax rocketed the first goal in at four minutes, followed by rookie midfielder Tara Condos (Strathroy, ON), third-year striker and team co-captain Elise Desjardins at 20 minutes, and third-year midfielder Megan Bell, also of Halifax, nailed the fourth goal at 31 minutes for a commanding 4-0 lead at the break.
The onslaught continued in the second half. Fourth-year defender and team co-captain Katie Lugg (Ottawa), also of the Canadian ringette team, lasered a shot in at 57 minutes to set the stage for midfielder Krista Glowacki (North Vancouver) to blast her first career goal in the 80th and rookie forward Marie-Eve Gauthier (Quebec City), who wasn't expecting to play I the season opener, closed out the scoring in the 90th.
"Almost all of our shots were from the outside and right in the corner," said Lugg.
The Excalibur, with 14 players in their first or second season, had one rush in 90 minutes and no shots on goal.
The Gee-Gees, 1-0, host city rival Carleton University Wednesday, Sept. 3, 7:00 p.m., at the Sports Complex.
