RMC SOCCER TO BE STRONGLY REPRESENTED AT 2009 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
KINGSTON, Ont. - Nine student-athletes from the Royal Military College of Canada - four current and five graduates - have been named to the Canadian Forces women's military soccer team roster. These athletes are headed to the 5th World Military Women's Football Championship, hosted by the United States, in cooperation with the International Military Sports Council (CISM).
From RMC's current roster, Samantha Beckett (Coquitlam, B.C.), Alexandre Brault (pictured) of Ottawa, Ont., Laura Gray (Halifax, N.S.) and Heather MacLellan (Kingston, Ont.) have been selected for the Canadian Forces women's team. Beckett and Gray will be making their first appearances in international military competition, while Brault and MacLellan return for their second straight championship.
Five graduates of the RMC women's soccer program have also been named to the final roster. Jessica Dulac (Sherbrooke, Que.), Lauren Flaherty (Windsor, N.S.), Dawn Macdonald (Fort St. James, B.C.), Andrea Perry (Ottawa, Ont.) and Melanie Ross (Cochrane, Alta.) will represent Canada and the Canadian Forces in the week long championship.
"We are very proud of our current and former players for making this roster," states RMC's head coach Chad Beaulieu. "The Women's World Military Football Championship is a world class event and it is a great opportunity for these athletes to compete at this level. I wish them best success and high performance, as I know they hold themselves to high standards of play."
The Canadian Forces Women's Team have been drawn into Group A and will face Bulgaria, Holland and France. Group B includes the host USA, reigning world military champions Germany, Republic of South Korea and newcomers Brazil.
"It speaks volumes about RMC's varsity soccer program that so many of the top athletes in the Canadian Forces compete for RMC," states RMC's director of athletics, Darren Cates. "Chad has developed these young women so they are now ready to take on some of the best in the world."
