OUA PLAYOFF PUSH: W-SOCCER
The No. 4-nationally ranked York Lions (9-2-3) will play their first post-season game of 2008 when they host the Brock Badgers (8-3-4), 1-0 winners of an opening round playoff match against the Western Mustangs.
The Lions are led by 2008 OUA goals champion Stefania Morra (Scarborough, Ont.), who scored 18 goals during the regular season. Jill Geier (Ancaster, Ont.) was the leader on the Badgers with six goals. York won two games against Brock during the regular season by a combined score of 4-2.
In another West Division showdown, the No. 7 McMaster Marauders (8-0-6) host the Laurier Golden Hawks (9-1-5). The Marauders are the only team in OUA not to taste defeat in 2008. McMaster has balanced scoring, with Maria Cusimano (North York, Ont.) and Kirsten Lowe (Acton, Ont.) scoring four goals each. Jennifer Fewster-Yan (Scarborough, Ont.) scored two goals in Laurier's 3-1 opening round playoff win against the Waterloo Warriors.
Over in the East Division, the Queen's Gaels (9-4-2) will make the trek east to visit the No. 6 Ottawa Gee-Gees (9-2-3). Ottawa is seeking a seventh berth in the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) tournament in the last eight years.
The Gee-Gees are led by the duo of Courtney Luscombe (Ottawa, Ont.) and Catherine Scott (Kirkland, Que.) who each netted five goals in the regular season. Kate McKenna (Oakville, Ont.) of the Gaels stopped all six shots she faced in a 2-0 playoff win against Nipissing. She has recorded a CIS-leading seven shutouts.
In the final game of the weekend, the Carleton Ravens (7-6-2) visit the No. 5 Toronto Varsity Blues (10-2-2) on Sunday. The Blues finished in top spot in the East Division, led by Erica Basso's (Richmond Hill, Ont.) nine goals. The Ravens got past the Laurentian Lady Vees 2-1 in a shootout. Aisha Stinson (Ottawa, Ont.) scored Carleton's lone goal in regulation.
The winners of these games advance to the semi-finals on Nov. 1.
