VARSITY BLUES WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM UNSTOPPABLE IN INSTANBUL
The four-day tournament, hosted by Boðaziçi University, included 21 different sports with teams from Europe and North America. U of T was the first Canadian team to participate in the tournament's history.
Adjusting to the new playing conditions and climate, the Blues were able to edge Belgium 1-0 on the first day of the tournament. Christina Fantozzi (Richmond Hill, Ont.) scored the lone goal in the victory.
Toronto then defeated the host Boðaziçi University, 4-0, in the second round-robin game. Fantozzi scored her second of the tournament, while Mary Anne Barnes (Toronto, Ont.), Erica Basso (King City, Ont.), and Juliana Bergin (Barrie, Ont.) also scored in the victory.
With a perfect 2-0 record, the Blues headed to the championship game, where they again faced Belgium. Dominating from the start, Toronto's Mel Seabra (Brampton, Ont.) notched two goals in the first half. Bergin added an insurance marker in the second half to secure the 3-0 shutout victory and tournament title.
Goalkeeper Leslie Kennedy (Albert Bridge, N.S.) was perfect in net with no goals against in all three games.
