GEE-GEES PERFECT RIVALRY RECORD REMAINS INTACT
The Gee-Gees, ranked No. 7 in the first CIS Top-Ten of the season, have not lost to unranked Carleton in uOttawa's 15-season history, with a 22-0-7 lifetime regular season record.
The Gee-Gees outshot the Ravens 7-2 but Carleton out-carded uOttawa 2-1 after second-year Ravens forward Shayla Levecchia (65th) and third-year midfielder Alexandra Skupek (77) were flashed yellow in the second-half.
Gee-Gees coach Steve Johnson said he liked his team's moxie in facing numerous physical challenges.
"I think this means the players are willing to fight to win," he said.
Lisa Sunstrum, a mild-mannered second-year Gee-Gees defender from Russell, ON, was carded in the first half off a hard tackle, and limped from a charley horse after the match.
"I had to stop their break, so I put my body into it," said Sunstrom. "Carleton is always a rough game."
The teams were scoreless in a chippy first half that saw uOttawa take five corners and commit eight fouls to the Ravens seven.
"It was a battle. It's always a battle against them," said Ravens coach Andy Nera, addiing there is no need for pre-game pep talks when playing the Gee-Gees.
"It's that cross-town rivalry and it is great."
The teams meet again at Carleton Oct. 15.
The Gee-Gees visit Laurentian (0-0-1) Saturday, Sept. 6, 2:15 p.m.
