OUA W-SOCCER ROUNDUP: OTTAWA, LAURIER IN OUA FINAL
uOttawa advances to its 10 Ontario conference final in 12 seasons, seeking a seventh championship.
Desjardins, a Gee-Gees co-captain, scored in the 36th off a rebound of a bending corner just inside the post to put uOttawa into Sunday's conference final.
"The keeper was screened and didn't have a chance," said Gee-Gees coach Steve Johnson. "It was just a rocket."
"It's gritty soccer," said Desjardins. "I knew there were a lot of bodies in front of the net."
The Gee-Gees were outshot 10-8 but took seven corners to none for the Badgers, which will play for the Ontario conference bronze medal Sunday morning.
"We are generating chances and we don't score," said Badgers coach Charles Ivanov. "Sometimes we are afraid we are going to miss."
Scott, a fourth-year transfer midfielder from McGill, took each of the Gee-Gees free kicks and corners.
"I commend my team for going into the fouls and not being afraid," said Scott.
Win or lose Sunday the Gee-Gees earn a seventh berth to the CIS tournament in eight years, seeking a second national championship.
"I was nervous all week," said Johnson. ‘This is a team that deserves to go back to nationals and show what they can do."
NO. 8 LAURIER 3, CARLETON 1
Second-year defender Liora Berger scored six minutes in and the Carleton Ravens helped from there, going on to lose a OUA semi-final Saturday afternoon 3-1 to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.
Fourth-year Golden Hawks midfielder Jen Hopper made it 2-0 with a shot in the 34th that pinballed through the Ravens defence and by rookie goalkeeper Erin Klimas.
"It went in the net, that's all the matters," said Hopper.
Laurier then followed up with a successful penalty shot from second-year midfielder Becca Isaacs in the 86th.
"The second goal will hurt but that first goal I think was the most important one," said Ravens assistant coach Fred Juett.
Wilfrid Laurier advances to the OUA final Sunday morning against the host Gee-Gees, and win or lose will advance to the CIS national tournament.
"Our number one goal is to win Ontario and then we will focus on nationals after that," said Hopper.
The Ravens will play Brock for the bronze medal Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m.
"We have a berth to nationals on the line. If that is not enough motivation for the student-athletes, then nothing will be," said Juett. "We need to be ready to go tomorrow with so much on the line."
